When my QX4 is cold the shift from 2nd to 3rd is sluggish or slow. The effect reminds me of a slipping clutch. When it warms up within minutes its fine. The vehicle has just 100,000 miles on it and I had the transmission serviced recently at an Infiniti dealer to see if it would clear it up. It shifts better on all shifts since the service and is not as jerky on initial acceleration either cold or warm.

Now with about 3,000 miles after the transmission service it seems to be improving slightly and slowly. I do tend now to go easy until it warms up. It does appear to be a minor transmission issue.

SOURCE: 2002 kia optima slipping into 3rd and 2nd gear while driving

UPDATE! ! ! Fixed this problem! YES ! ! ! The speed sensors was all that needed replacing. NOT ANY SOLENOIDS ! !. Two of them cost $160 and it solved the problem! Do not buy from the dealers. An after market version is available for $50 each. I was forced to buy dealers.

SOURCE: MY 2001 INFINITI QX4 KEEPS SAYING SERVICE SOON

First off, make sure that the gas cap is tightened beyond three clicks. If it is and has been then there are many things that could be causing the light to come on. But let me start by assuring you that it is not something that requires immediate attention. The sole purpose of the service engine light is to detect malfunctions of emissions related components. If the gas cap isn't tight, the computer system detects an incorrect amount of pressure inside the tank due to vapor leaking out of the filler neck. If the cap is tightened after a period of time the computer detects the right pressure and the light will go off. However, on QX4's the most common cause of the light is oxygen sensors, or cam and crank position sensors, and finally intake valve timing control sensors or solenoids. O2 sensors measure the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas. Normally I have seen that in damp and wet conditions these sensors are more likely to intermittenly give false readings. That being said, although the SES light is not an emergency situation, it will need to be addressed at some point, as the Engine control module takes the readings from these various sensors and automatically adjusts things like idle control, and air fuel mixture ratio, and eventually will to some point affect the performance of the vehicle. I have seen folks drive 100K miles with a service engine light on, so if you don't want to spend a 200 or so dollars right away, I would take the car to autozone, have the codes retrieved, and report back to this forum, at that point I would be able to advise you a little further. But more than likely you could continue driving the car without any driveablility issues.

SOURCE: hard up and down-shifting into 2nd gear - manual transmission

I have a Focus that had shifting problems. I tried different fluids, but eventually I tried Royal Purple Synchromax (I believe) and it actually shifts fairly well now. I used to hate the car for this. It has 130k miles and I like driving it now.

What can cause transmission on 1964 Thunderbird not to shift from 2nd to 3rd for about 5 minutes, After that everything is fine.

Really dirty tranny fluid. As it gets warm, the viscosity (resistance to flow) lessens; the fluid gets more watery. When that happens, it can lubricate the gears and other parts more easily. When it's cold, the fluid is probably too thick and sluggish to move.

Clutch starting to slip 1994 camaro can i adjust it

It does sound like your clutch needs replacing. Adjusting the clutch may help but will not solve the problem. If the transmission has not been serviced for a long time it is a good idea to replace the transmission fluid, inspect the pressure plate. They may also start to wear.

The mechanic tells me my clutch is slipping and needs rreplacing 85,000 km. How do I know if this is reliable info? I feel nothing

TEst for slipping clutch is travel about 30 mph. press clutch, shift to 3rd, rev engine pretty high and release clutch, at the time of clutch release, floor throttle. If the engine continues to race, clutch not grabbing porperly, if the clutch works properly, the engine will be slowed and engauged.
You can always get a 2nd opinon from another shop.

the 85,000 mile coutch worn out issue dependes entirely on driving habits of the operators.

Usually burnt and discolored ATF mean pump or torque converter not doing there job or bands and clutches are worn. Shift solinoid or a pressure problem is the problem with 2nd and 3rd gear, Take it to a transmission shop and have them look it over but like I said earlierdiscolored ATF could mean a rebuild.

Sounds like a sychro problem when you rebuilt. I have always found with my gearbox, even when warm it is easy to beat the sychros so i make slower changes. Unless you fix the sychro rings the problem will only get worse
