There are 2 sensors. One is used for the temperature guage Single wire connection - Yellow/white(1 on diagram). The one I suspect you are looking for is used by the ECU and is at the back of the engine, has a green connecting head with 2 wires leading to it, yellow and white/black(2 on diagram). Then there is a third used by the A/C(iii on diagram)
Perhaps this will clarify:
The one directly under the distributor is for the temp guage. (number 1 in the 1st diagram) and number 2 in the first diagram is used by the ECU to determine coolant temp.
Have you located the sensor? If you need further assistance testing it just leave a comment again.
You are right.
Try checking from the underside of the vehicle(or might I suggest the SO's handheld mirror?). The designers were a little silly in their placement of this sensor.
Which year model do you have?
Cellphone with front facing camera can also come in handy at times. ;-)
To test the old sensor, you'll need a thermometer and muli meter.
Tie a piece of wire around the sensor, and let it hang inside a pot. Fill the pot with water to cover the sensor up to the thread. Connect 2 wires to the sensor(2.5mm female terminals will do) for the connection, long enough so that you can measure resistance without scalding yourself. Slowly raise the water temperature. These are the readings that you should get:
20 deg C - 1950 to 2950 ohm,
40deg C - 840 to 1440 ohm,
60 deg C - 384 to 784 ohm,
80 deg C - 222 to 422 ohm.
If you are replacing the senor make sure to clean off the sealant before fitting. Refit with PTFE(pipe/Teflon) tape.
Thankyou for the 2 thumbs rating. It is much appreciated, especially since the 4 thumbs rating given to another respondent contains so much more info than what I supplied.
thanx bro, it is very inportant to me cos i got tree guage so i need to swap the old one , it is clear to me now cos it has two
