So i have a 97 dodge 1500. 168,000 with no problems, when one day the overdrive off light turned on and i lost od. then it wouldnt shift at all til i hit 4,000 rpm. shop said to replace tranny. I put in a used tranny with 80k on it. the day i picked it up i was gettin a whirling sound and an occassional buzzin. i put 40 miles on it and od went out. i drove 6 more miles took a left turn and lost 3rd. i made it home on 2 gears, shut the truck off, went out 2 hrs later and when i put it in reverses it just chattered. put it in drive, nothing. dropped it to 1st and it moved, but only 3 ft before it started chattering again. FRIED. any ideas? torque converter, computer, just bad tranny? IDK...

either repair or replace the transmission...sounds like the sensor went out

check for a faulty valve body. there is a tech service bulletin for your problem. obtain a chilton's, or haynes repair manual specific to your truck, in the general maint. section you will find how to perform this operation. it is fairly simple. (if i can do it) adjust both bands then start/engage the reverse to see if this solves the problem. the TSB can be found on any internet site that features them. ex. type dodge ram tsb's and you will be on the right track. if this does not solve your problem, you could have a partially clogged trans coolant line as there is a check valve located within the return line that if it becomes clogged, will not allow fluid to enter the converter.

Ther e is a chance your injectors are leakin g down and there is excess fuel in the cylinders. Not a good thing. So, you fuel pressure and injectors need chkg. good luck

have you dropped the pan to see whats the bands are set at, any debris in pan bottom, whats your governor pressure, if bands are ok, but gov pressures are not relative to speed 1 psi per mph up to 95-127psi, port is on pass side of case rear top right, scan tool would be very helpful, your must have mil light on for this problem, gov dtc's, replace gov transducer as gov solniod as a pair, no exceptions, also are there any 02 sensor dtc's, shorted to voltage, this wil make pcm do stupid things to trans shift, affecting gov signals.
