My mother had the oil changed in her 1992 Mercury Marquis, only 62,000 miles and the mechanic says we need to fix the crank pulley wobble? I have never heard of this, can you tell me what he is talking about for $172.00? Thanks Jimmy

HI. This can be a potentially damaging find. The actual pulley may be separating from the crank shaft, itself.

Your crank pulley is bolted directly onto the harmonic balancer. The bolt that holds the balancer to the engine block may be loose, or the balancer, itself, may be separating. This condition could also destroy your crankshaft, if not repaired, asap. Hopefully your crank shaft is in good condition, and the culprit will turn out to be just a simple loose pulley bolt. The repair cost could catapult to a higher rate if it turns out to be a crank shaft fault.

Have this potentially damaging condition inspected, asap.

What can cause a belt to break on a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis or do I have to replace the Idler pulley on it which seem to be a little loosen than all the other belts? Or will it be another problem.

Everything is driven by the crankshaft pulley at the bottom and is by far the hardest to turn, but it is the driving pulley.

The alternator should turn easily.

The steering pump should turn easily.

The water pump should turn easily.

The AC Compressor is harder.

The Idler and Tensioner should spin freely.

All pulleys should have no discernable lateral movement that would cause wobble. All the pulley should be in alignment with each other. The tensioner should not be TOO tight.

How do I replace the Airconditioning/power steering belt on a Grand marquis, Mercury(1992)? please show me in a diagram or print somehow

Move the Grand Marquis's serpentine belt tensioner off the serpentine belt with the serpentine belt tool. Pull the belt of the remaining pulleys by hand. Take the belt out of the engine well. Wrap the new belt around the bottom portion of the crankshaft pulley. Follow the belt routing diagram to route the belt over each remaining pulley until only the tensioner remains. Move the Grand Marquis's serpentine belt tensioner aside once more and slip the belt onto the tensioner pulley.Hold the belt in place with one hand while you move the tensioner slowly back into position with the other. Here you can fine the quality AC parts http://www.1airconditioning.com/ac_compresor.htm

I have a 2000 Grand Marquis, with 62,000 miles. The oil light turned on. The car is not low on oil. Is it ok to drive it to my dealer

I WOULD SAY NO ONLY BECAUSE IT MAY INDICATE LOW OIL PRESSURE LIKE INTERNAL OIL PUMP THAT MAY HAVE GONE BAD,OR IT COULD BE A FAULTY SENDING UNIT, WHICH IS A CHEAP FIX.BUT EITHER WAY ITS BETTER TO BE SAFE THEN SORRY. 3K FOR A NEW MOTOR INSTALLED.

I have a 1996 isuzu rodeo 6 cylinder with 159t miles. My replaced radiator, water pump, timing belt and other hoses and also mechanic repair leak to oil pan and stop oil leak from valve gaskets. Now I am...

Did you ask why the crank pulley needs replaced?

That unit is a solid piece of steel and I can't imagine what could go wrong with it unless it was damaged when it was removed when the timing belt was changed.

I have a 1997 Rodeo with 163,000 miles. It still is running but is showing its age. My son owned a 1995 model and went over 200,000 on it. Both vehicles suffered from excessive rust in the undercarriage.

If you are paying a mechanic to fix that vehicle, I'd propose that it is more expensive to keep running than it is worth.

Again, ask why he wants to replace the crank pulley. If the vehicle runs OK as it is, and his answer is not coherent, skip this repair and drive it for the life it has left with minimal repairs only.

The v8 engine in my 1992 mercury grand marquis has a leak somewhere by oil filter area and I'm trying to find the name of a gasket that needs to be replaced in order to fix that leak.

might be the oil filter adapter (the stud that the filter threads onto). I would try replacing filter first twist on till tight then use filter wrench to tighten 1/4 to 1/2 turn more

92' grand marquis, 140,000 miles, 4.6 ltr., 2 overhd cam. smokes after idol but not when first started or after sitting for any length of time.???

piston rings are worn. do an oil change and substitute 1 qt of oil with 1 qt of lucas oil treatment. when the engine heats up the oil thins and gets past the rings and combusts along with the fuel. the fix i recommended will only reduce the sympyoms and confirm the rings are worn. you'll need a ring job to fix.
