94 cougar stuck in park and no brake lights - 1994 Mercury Cougar

Brake switch, check and see if you have brake lights. If you have lights it is the wiring or solenoid at the shifter.

First thing to do is check to see if the brake lights work, if they don't there is no power to the park lock out solenoid and the vehicle will not come out of park.

Still no brake lights would indicate a bad wire. Check for power at the brake switch, repair the wire, they usually break close to the plug. This will get back the lights and shifter. The no start would be the neutral safety switch on the transmission. Usually the switch is under the shifter cable. Some have a separate switch.

Not too sure about your car but some cars will not shift gears if stop lights are not working. Fix the stop light problem before trying anythnig.

You need a brake switch. There is a solenoid that locks the car in park unless you press the brake and if that switch is bad you won't be able to take it out of park. The brake switch is above the brake pedal. If you have two switches there, one of them is for the cruise and the other is for the lights. The one with less wires coming from it are for the brake lights and that is the one you need to replace.

Check your brake lights. If they dont work, the shifter will not come out of park. You should be able to turn key on, move shifter, then start it in neutral. Check fuses and then brake light switch.

The indicator light is there to tell you your brakes are out of adjustment just remember that if you just replaced your brakes that your parking brake may need adjusted this will make the light stay on also.

The brake light switch is on your brake pedal.You may have more then one switch on the pedal.

sounds like your brake/shift interlock solenoid is not releasing.
Your owner manual will tell you how to bypass in emergency.
Check your fuse first. fuse panel on instrument panel.

The selector lever lock can be moved mechanically out of position ”P" when for example the battery is disconnected or completely discharged.
Using a ball point pen or similar item as an unlocking lever, push forward and hold in position.

Move the selector lever out of position "P".

NOTE: If the selector lever is moved back to ”P" it is re-locked.

check and make sure your brake light s work, if they don't the shifter is locked out, it is a safety feature to make sure your foot is on the brake when u shift into drive or reverse.
