I have a 1997 Mercury Cougar XR7 Anniversary edition. It is the eight cylinder model. My driver's side door handle has broken off and left just a sliver with which to open the door. My @#$%$%$ Ford dealer says the parts are not available as they are "obsolete". Do you know of a source of parts for this vehicle?
I have the exact same car and problem. There are no aftermarket parts to be found any where. The only parts available that I could find are for 83-88year model no higher. To make matters worse the passenger side has now completely broke off.I have the exact same car and problem. There are no aftermarket parts to be found any where. It should still be possible, using a little bit of force. all screws and bolts holding on the panel are accessible, even with the door closed...but the panel maybe slightly pinched on the front and rear ends, and possibly on the bottom...but pulling hard on the handle once every bolt and screw is removed should force the panel loose
the filter is located under the car on the drivers side in ahead of the gas tank along the edge were the floor board and the kick panel meet.its round and about 3"long
HOW LONG IS IT STAYING ON? 5 OR 10 MINUTES IS OK. IF IT'S ON LONGER, IT'S PROBABLY THE RELAY. THY THAT FIRST. IF THAT DOESN'T FIX IT , HAVE A RELIABLE SHOP CHECK THE BODY CONTROL MODULE.
Not sure if you got your cougar running or not, but I had a similar problem and it turned out to be my Crank shaft sensor. I replaced it myself, its fairly easy if you are the type that likes to pull stuff apart and fix it. The part cost about $20. you do have to move the ac compressor over but you don't have to remove it makes the job a lot easier. I am still running the 1997 cougar xr7 30th anniversary edition, it has 160000 miles on it and still running strong. I think these are the best cars mercury ever built, i hope they come out with them again in this body style and platform.
