80C. Summer time city driving, it reaches 90C from time to time. It's OK.

I would check a few things if goes over 90C. These things are simple ones...

- level of coolant
- activation of fan 110-120 IS TOO HIGH!

Saturn sl2 temperature gauge normal reading?

mid range of the gauge is normal keep in mind the full sweep of the gauge is only about 40 degrees the fan turns on at 220 degrees

Temperature gauge not working or starts to work and wanders all over up to mid-normal and back down. Radiator is full and overflow bottle is not going down. Car has plenty of heat even when driving fast,...

You;ll need to locate the temperature sending unit and replace it. It will be screwed into the engine block or more likely the intake manifold where there is a water jacket. This should be a simple job as you just unhook the electrical plug connected to it, replace it and reconnect the connector.

How many pounds of r134 and how much oil ozs.

somewhere around 1.6 pounds (1lb.14ounces) of R134a if system is evacuated and 3 ounces of oil with new compressor.
keep pressure on the low side around 34-37psi & it should blow snow. Below are normal car AC pressure readings with 134A.
  • Normal readings on high and low side with AC OFF (static pressure) – Depends on outside temperature, but normally is between 80-105 PSI
  • Normal low side reading with AC on high speed and MAX & engine at 800-1000 RPM’s – Ranges from 25-35 PSI –
  • Normal high side reading ranges from 200-350 PSI
Don’t assume that if adding little Freon is good that adding a lot is better! Overcharging just a little can decrease the performance of the system and possibly damage the compressor.
DIY recharge kit:
With the AC on the coldest setting, use a thermometer in a middle vent. Normal vent temperature readings will vary depending on the (ambient) outside temp. The vent temperature should range from around 42-55 degrees in my experience. If normal gauge readings are obtained and the vent air is cold – STOP don’t overcharge the system.
Thank you for using fixya and be safe.

If normal gauge readings are obtained and the vent air is cold – STOP don’t overcharge the system. The only proper way to remove refrigerant is with a AC recovery machine so if this is being done at home I can’t emphasize enough not to over charge the system.

Thank you for using fixya and be safe.

Temperature gauge back and forth between normal

the fan comes on and off based on the "temperature sending unit" thats a thermal switch mounted on the radiator .. it is normal for the temperature to fluxuate as the fan turns on and off .. if it is allowed to get too hot before turning on then the temperature sending unit should be replaced ...while the car is moving the fan may never come on and isnt needed as long as air is flowing through the radiator .. as long as you are not loosing coolant then the temperatures are probably within proper range ... a sticking thermostat can also cause increased temperature range fluxuations .. that will show up as large swings of temp while driving .....

My temperature gauge warning light is coming on periodically...oil level is fine. What should the temperature be at? Is it possibly a sensor problem?

The temperature guage measures the coolant temperature, not the oil temperature -- the normal range is indicated on the guage.

Check your coolant.
