if you have an O2 sensor faliure you will have a code for it. in fact youe exterra doesnt have O2 sensors. it has A/F sensor or "air/fuel sensor" if it went bad, than you will have a code for that sensor. What is the code number that you have?? need to start there.
It sounds like a bad connection to the battery or starter so check your wireing something is likely loose you can follow the large red wire to the starting motor and pull on it to see if the problem goes away if it dose you still have to remove it clean and retighten
your coolant level is low in the overflow tank/pressure tank. the pressure tank is right by the washer fluid fill cap. its the white tank right behind the washer fill cap, which is blue. make sure you dont open the overflow tank when vehicle is hot. add coonalt into the white tank. you can seethrough the tank. the tank is glued together from 2 sections. lower and upper. you can see the seam when you look at it. fill coolant so its above the seam. that will do it.
When you try to start does the motor spin but wont start or is there no noise at all, if its no noise at all then i would start by checking the starter and if it spins but wont start then try holding gas pedal down and cranking the motor with a dead battery it may have lost memory and will need to run awhile to relearn idle at start up and other readings you may need to hold gas pedal to keep running for a few minutes, start with this first.
p0217 is coolant over temperature. the fan clutch may be slipping or the thermostat is bad. changing the thermostat would probably be the easiest and most inexpensive fix to determine the problem.
Hi Code P 0217 does point to the thermostat but it also points to the wiring, cooling system, and the temperature sensor, to check the thermostat start engine then once the temperature gauge in the car reaches normal the thermostat should open and the top hose that goes into the radiator will warm up quickly as the thermostat opens, if the thermostat is stuck in it's open position the top hose will start warming up before the engine reaches it's working temperature, hopefully i have explained it clearly,
Try contacting Nissan. On some vehicles there is a procedure for recoding the antitheft computer. This is when you get a key with a computer chip. Tell them you do not have a second key to start the recoding process. The owners manual may give you a procedure for making a copy of the original but it requires a second original key to do it.
