The keys will move the door locks up and down....but the doors will not budge.....I was able to get into car this morning but had to use the back doors to exit the car....Does this have something to do with the cold weather.......what is the actual problem ? Hi i know lots of owners that go through this problem
And you will have to remove the door cards on both doors, and give the lock parts a good lubrication .Dont use WD40 its not a lubricant Use good oil and brush it on all the parts inside the lock ..You can use engine oil if you dont have any other . .

SOURCE: volks jetta deisel 1997 won't start

The plug is attached to a block heater that warms the antifreeze when the car is sitting. I own a 2004 Jetta Diesel that has done fine all the way down to -10F without plugging it in, just make sure to always cycle the glow plugs before you crank the engine when you first start it, that's the most important step when starting a diesel. Your car probably gets around 50 MPG and diesel fuel doesn't burn as hot as gasoline, so starting and keeping the car at it's full operating temperature on a cold winter day can be almost impossible.

But what i read afterwards is there is a locking mechanism in the ignition it is a white thing that slides so you cant get your key in this can be moved with a a small aharp object ant you can then get your key in!!!

SOURCE: the driver side door lock broke on my 98 jetta door want open

according to my partsman (who has had great advice for many years), you do not have to remove the door panel to replace the door handle which contains the cylinder lock. the handle is released with a screw which you can see when you open the door. you will need a starhead screwdriver or socket. A new handle costs around $40 at a parts store in my area. call around for a locksmith who will re-key your key to the new lock or use the key which comes with the new lock, your choice. i am in dealing with this also

Jetta alarm

There are a few possible problems which may cause this. A bad wiring in one of the components that are part of the alarm system. (door locks, hood, trunk, radio and ignition).
Try checking the main wiring harness to each door, they are protected by a rubber boot that is in the vehicle body along the door frame close to door hinges. Common for wires breaking and causing this. A defective radio may cause this problem also,. Another is the hood / trunk switches or wiring.

1997 jetta will not start. the battery has been disconnected and charged. Is it true that when the power has been disconnected that there are some security steps to go through before the car can be...

all vw MUST be reset after battery dies/changed.put key in door,unlock/hold key over 30 secs(windows go down)then lock/hold key over 30 secs(windows go up/sunroof closes)then press unlock button on remote for 30 secs......RESET DONE......(try this for fun....sit in car after turning off engine/remove key, drivers door keypad is still live(until you open door)ALSO when engine is running lower any window and then raise up with fingers in top of door, the window will rollback.(if you do it once it hurts..twice it really hurts..three times it traps your hand in.)ALL THIS is NOT in the handbook.......

Everytime you trie to start my 1997 Jetta G.O. the alarm goes off, how do i disconnect the alarm without unhooking the battery?

Try unlocking it from the passenger door (with the key). the driver door lock has a weak connection that wears out, then the car doesn't "know" you unlocked it from driver's side. Do you have the key fob to unlock it? If so, use it (unlock) then open the pass. door.
Please let me know if this worked! -Tom

1997 Jetta Drivers side door will not open.

One thing... If your last 3 doors works fine it's mean that problem is only in your drivers side. In VW like nickalxjoe wrote is air pump. So there might be an air leaking which you can hear. So if you can hear from where air running out try to fix this first.

All power door locks lock except the driver side front door

On my jetta, if you don't lock the doors with the remote then all doors lock except the drivers door. try this
1. closing all doors walk around to the passenger door.
2.open the door, using the button on the passenger door, lock the doors.

I had this happen to me on my jetta and found you could lock all the doors if you did'nt use the drivers door or you locked using the remote. They did this to keep the driver from locking the keys in the car. I hope this worked for you

1997 Toyota Rav4 doors are locked

over time the grease in the locks etc can become frozen and stop movement when its warmed up a bit it will move better, using the key on the doors every now and then helps move this greas about as the central locking wont move these parts only the switches, replacing the grease after a degreasing locking mechanisms inside the door on the rear of the lock should help choose a grease that can handle low temperatures.

Front drivers door lock issues

Our '97 Jetta locking is similar. One back door does not go down with the driver's door key double turn. We push it down manually before locking the rest with the key. I believe electrical lock actuator is gone on that door. Down the repair list. I have had door panels off on the car fixing electric window regulator. There is quite an expensive plastic sheet glued on to inside of door for sound proofing. Real hard not to tear. I bought new one from the dealer. Also little plastic clips around the door panel perimeter were brittle and about 50% broke, but not so expensive.
