Hi i know lots of owners that go through this problem
And you will have to remove the door cards on both doors, and give the lock parts a good lubrication .Dont use WD40 its not a lubricant Use good oil and brush it on all the parts inside the lock ..You can use engine oil if you dont have any other . .

The plug is attached to a block heater that warms the antifreeze when the car is sitting. I own a 2004 Jetta Diesel that has done fine all the way down to -10F without plugging it in, just make sure to always cycle the glow plugs before you crank the engine when you first start it, that's the most important step when starting a diesel. Your car probably gets around 50 MPG and diesel fuel doesn't burn as hot as gasoline, so starting and keeping the car at it's full operating temperature on a cold winter day can be almost impossible.

I had the problem with key not going into the ignition on 2005.5 Jetta had to have the car towed and ignition replaced which cost 375$. But what i read afterwards is there is a locking mechanism in the ignition it is a white thing that slides so you cant get your key in this can be moved with a a small aharp object ant you can then get your key in!!!

according to my partsman (who has had great advice for many years), you do not have to remove the door panel to replace the door handle which contains the cylinder lock. the handle is released with a screw which you can see when you open the door. you will need a starhead screwdriver or socket. A new handle costs around $40 at a parts store in my area. call around for a locksmith who will re-key your key to the new lock or use the key which comes with the new lock, your choice. i am in dealing with this also

The distributor maybe the problem if it has one. There is usually a rubber seall to keep moisture out. Maybe the rubber seal is broken already.
