Kept geting " check engine" light on my Isuzu Rodeo. Spent a bunch of money to get it fixed but nobody could until I found an old experienced mechanic. Turns out to be the "transmission position switch" on the transmission handle on the floor. A small switch to tell the engine to adjust fuel air mixture. Was told this is a very common problem.
After you change the gas cap like everybody tells you. The transmission position micro switch on the floorboard.
if you listen on the internet to non techs
you will get wrong answers, most posters fail this....(most think cars are all the same, and is WRONG)
to even say what engine they have? nor trans.
so, with dead empty inputs even a genius guesses wrong, right>? no me I didnt guess.
The "old experienced,"
so you use Mechanics with no experience nor training before?
gee all cars scan now and all can do like 100 errors, or more. DTC warning,
"DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES" (by law)
all ASE mech, know how to fix cars,
check fuse first (means test them)
then scan it.
then post the error
or login to mitchells DIY and read what the error means (DTC's) then you have facts.
guessing the 100 possible is silly to a fault. really.
yes gascap loose sets a DTC error
like P0455
the P044x series for EVAP failure
EVAP means gas tank vent failure.
and if cap is missing or leaking, (loose)
the fumes vent (and mother earth dies)
and the nanny in the PCM finds that and tells you if you listen (read) it.
or try this?
get car fixed or serviced.
get car scanned where ever.
get car scanned for free at many places
buy a scanner.
rent a scanner.
barrow a scanner.
and for sure try not to be rank helpless.

kelly please start your own post
there can be 1000s of possible problems.
and up to 100codes. the car and the EFI are complex its not some kids toy car..
check fuses, and then scan it.
like everyone else does in all cars made with EFI.
all.
or just drive to the shop and has them to scan your car.
is that hard?
so your PRNDL switch was bad
well gee the PCM reported that if you asked it.
and on most cars this error is serious.
on many cars the PCM goes in to limphome and with the transmission too can go to limphome mode.
this is to protect you and the transmissison from damage. and performance falls in limphome on all cars made.
google that or take the ASE class in EFI.
it's all there, and all factual.
check fuses first
then scan it,
or get car serviced like 99.9% do, today.

Gas cap isn't on right. Remove and retighten. Turn it at least 5 times.
Hi,
Thank
you for contacting fixya.com.
Since
the spark plug is not coming in contact the engine light is flashing. Otherwise
take your car to the nearest auto zone and check if any code is stored in the
computer or not to get it fixed. However a flashing engine light means the ECU
has detected a misfire strong enough to damage the catalyst in the cat.
Please
get back to us if you have further query else please accept the suggestion.

My Isuzu Rodeo,is starting very good.but if you engaged gear and drive enter on porthole showing check Engine, check Transmission, cruser set.And Engine is off?sometime if you shake body with hands showing the same and off.
I also have a check engine light that keeps coming on...isuzu rodeo as well...mechanic can't seem to find the cause...thinks it has something to do with the throttle...when it is finally NOT lit it comes on when you step on the gas..says not ready for sticker even when off?.any ideas???/
Similar problem -- check engine light, servicing of egr hose and valve, but the light returns and is on continuously. Engine seems to be running fine and getting good mileage.
Hey Anonymous,
Mike here, still have my 2002 Rodeo. Sorry I am
not a ASE certified, but I do use one, experience does matter and the "old mechanic"
that finally fixed my check engine problem was
a mechanic at a Isuzu dealership before they stopped sales in the US. Anybody can buy a fault code reader and use it but easter egging
is very expensive. I REPEAT the micro-switch
in the transmission position assembly can and did cause my "check engine light" to come on and replacing it "FIXED" the problem, it has not come back, and it has been 8 years.
Bye the bye
The Rodeo has 175K, looks great and runs well.
I'd buy another one or Passport if it were in good shape. Tough to find a real 4 wheel drive
SUV now, AWD is NOT the same.
