I was hauling fire wood. Going through brush, the speedometer cable has come out of the transmission. How do I get the speed ometer and cruise control to work. I tried to just push the cable back in but still no speedometer. Is the cable going in far enough back into the transmission?

There's a cable that goes from transmission to a unit box and from unit box to the dashboard and cruise control, if cruise control is working then the cable going to the dash is broken. If cruise control doesn't work. Check icable going to transmission
There is a plastic helical gear in the transmission, where the speedometer cable attaches. Start there. Usually 2-3 bolts that hold it in, when it comes out, some fluid will escape. Check that gear for wear, and broken splines. Then follow the cable up to the cruise control module. Some cars route the speedometer cable to the cruise control transducer, then to the firewall to the instrument cluster. That transducer goes bad. Thats what happened on my 81 olds. The speedometer would bounce around at speeds less than 15 mph. I replaced that transducer and it is steady now.
No I believe the speed ometer cable is broken.Dissconnect sppedometer cable from instrunent cluster, romove cable from back of speedometer &transmission case .romove speedometer from sppedometer cable housing if broken replace with new & make sure you grease cable when installing back in cale housing reconnect to transmission &back of speedometer.keep posting
Two possibilities, the speed sensor on the transmission or the stepper motor that drives the speedometer in the cluster. Is your cruise control working? If it is, then the problem is with the cluster.
Speedometer failed when the cable is broken; if the gears wont egnage, its possible that you have any propblem in the Torque Converter or Solenoids. First try with mainenance and check fluids.
There's cold solder joints inside the instument cluster find the joints with an OHM meter and touch each side till you find an open one and resolder away and then trset again as your not perfect either. If it doubt resolder them all.
You;ll want to look for a cable that runs from the transmission into the firewall, this usually controls the speedometer and odometer, depending on the configuration. If it is an analog odometer/speedometer, this is most likely where your problem is. The other alternative to this is a speed sensor gear that meshes with the main ring gear in the transmission which drives this cable. If you have no experience with transmissions, changing the speed sensor gear would probably better be left to a mechanic. I have seen many of these cables wear, and develop rust, then your driving along, and they break in half, since the cable actually spins inside a plastic sleeve.
