1999 Land Rover Disco. I added power steering fluid and drove through a snowstorm as well as a 40 mi trip the next day. The engine compartment is covered with a thin oily film and I think the tranny is slipping.. Are these related to one another? Last year I replaced two transmission cooling tubes.

Why did you add fluid - check the cap is on and that the hoses don't have a split otherwise it would help where the oil is in the engine bay if it's the front there is a leak hitting the fan likely coming off the pump onto the serpentine belt

Check the door switches for the interior lights and tighten the screws holding these on to make a good earth contact.Knock the door locks lightly with a hammer to get the insides loosened up and lube these with a penetrating spray.

Sounds Like Pinion Bearings , But Carrier Bearings Should Be Replaced (In My Opinion) as they Could Be Contaminated

SOURCE: Land Rover Discovery I dashboard replacement.

There is a little more to it than that, but not a tough job if you have patience. You will need to remove both 'doors' on the dash-one glovebox, one fuse access panel. on US models, you will need to remove the pass side airbag as well, then 2 bolts that hold a set of relays under the airbag, then 5 bolts that hold a support bracket (also under the pass side airbag-behind glovebox.

Then under the dash at teh outside near the doors, remove 2 sets of 10mm bolts. after than remove 2 sets of 10mm bolts near where the bottom of the dash touches the tranny tunnel. obviously all the center console needs to be removed, and the center panel of the dash, as there are several sets of screws that hold that to the back of the dash.

be patient, take lots of photos of how it goes together, and where the wiring is(was), and this is pretty easy.

Thanks

1995 Land rover discovery leaking power steering fluid.

the steering boxes on those were leaky messes, seal kits, rebuilt and new units are availible. expect a couple hours for a good mechanic to remove and replace, resealing takes a longer once the unit is out. be sure to also check the steering hoses and pipes for leaks, pretty much everything is located in the front left of the engine compartment. check out roversnorth.com and atlanticbritish.com for parts and prices. stay away from land rover dealers if you can to save on cost.
