Have automatic hubs on 4 wd 1999 Ford Ranger. Problem started by not engaging into 4 wd when selected. Now, selecting 4 wd does not even get the light indicating 4 wd. Then, after selector is turned back to 2 wd, the 4 wd high and 4 wd low lights will flash a few times and then go off. Tried replacing the motor for locking hubs, but did not solve problem.

its most likely one hub isnt locking . you need to take the hub apart and clean and inspect for broken parts(some time the hub will get 1/2 engaged and you would put power to it and will break the hub ) make sure your hub isnt broken then reassemble with light grease and try the hub. if broken new are very expensive. there are alot of used one in the salvage yards just give them a call they would love to help you at a fraction of the cost. tech rating 4

SOURCE: 4 wheel drive

there is a way to do that.....all you have to do is go get the manual locking hubs and switch it over...not that hard....did it to a early 90s f150....pretty easy.

SOURCE: not sure if the hubs are engaging?

Well, the best way is to place the vehicle on a hoist and raise all 4 wheels off the ground and put it in 4WD and see if all the wheels start turning.

Another way is to make a really sharp (slow) turn while the unit is in 4 wheel high or 4 wheel low on dry pavement. You should be able to feel the driveline wrap-up caused by the front wheels trying to grab during the hard turn.

4 Low should be easily distinguishable from 4 High as well as 2 Whl when you accelerate and it feels like the transmision is stuck in low gear and the engine starts screaming for mercy at high RPM and you are only doing 30 MPH.

Testimonial: "thanx i was able to get in in 4low,it just takes a few seconds as it goes from 4h then to 4l. I f I had the manual it probably would have told me that"

I have a 1995 For Ranger 4x4 with automatic locking hubs. When i engage the 4x4 the light comes on for 4 hi but not for 4 lo and i can hear a clicking in the transfer case but the hubs are not locking in....

The hubs engage by vaccum, you probably have a leak somewhere, the problem is it doesn't have to be leaking at the modual, anywhere on the engine that there is a vaccum line can cause this problem. If this is a truck that you like and want to keep for a long time you should consider swithing over to manual hubs they never fail and you'll save a ton of gas when your running in two wheel drive.

4 Wheel doesn't engage on 99 Ford Ranger

if you have locking hubs then yes. They could have been put together wrong. But if non locking then have it inspected to be sure nothing is off. It should be easy to find if something was left off.

I have a 1994 ford f150, my 4 wheel drive keeps trying to engage by itself even without me touching the automatic hub button....at time you can even hear it engaging and disengaging by itself, the low range light even comes on (dimly)...what could be the cause? the transfer case motor looks good and so does the wiring.
