Any other ideas on fixing the temperature gauge problem on the Montero? Could it be a bad temperature sensor?? Water pump?? Just throwing out ideas???
Good Day again,
Sorry to hear it wasn't the thermostat, Other possible causes inlcudes low coolant, water pump and or waterpump belt, radiator blockage, and radiator cap not maintaining pressure. Check you coolant level first, fill if it's low, typically if it was the pump you would devolop a coolant leak as the pressure builds in the pump assembly. Check the belt though, any squeaks while running? Also if the seal in the raditor cap is bad then no pressure can build. To test the pump remove the raditaor cap (ensure the motor is COLD!!) and start the motor w/o the cap installed, watch the coolant level as it is should be going down slowly as it pumps through the system. Also check the seal on the raditor cap for any cracks's or visible damage.
The temp sensor is a possibilty but a rare one at that.
Hope this helps again

2001 Mitsubishi Montero temperature guage on max while engine is running: I took it to MIDAS six months ago for problem and was told that the head gasket on passenger side was leaking and that was causing the probblem. (The cooling sytem check that they performed was OK.) The head gaskets, timing belt, and thermostat were replaced. The problem did not go away. I was then told that it was one of two temperature sensors and that a Mitsubishi dealer would have to replace. I was assured that the cooling system was working properly, even though the guage continues to read at max. Service engine light came on today and stayed on. The odometer reads 87,100 mile. Might the two be connected?
Hey everyone, well seems i have a very similar problem replaced the thermostat and still my engine heats up bad and starts to turn off on me and wont accelerate only when hot though. i also fixed a coolant line that busted at the bottom, how would i go about checking the pump and radiator cap ? thanks for the help
