Octane is a chemical that is added to gas to make it less explosive. The reason for this when the piston inside of your engine compresses the fuel air mixture, it can explode before the spark plug fires. If this happens, the piston will fire down the cylinder wall before the crank shaft and the piston rod reach their piviot points. The higher the octane rating the less explosive the fuel and the higher the compression can be in the engine - thus more horse power..The lower is just the opposite. ---------- For your Lexus ES350 Octane 91 is recommended.Engine will work fine with a lower 87 octane but not produce the maximum power it can achieve with a higher octane. It may also get worse fuel economy with lower octane, so be sure to measure your MPG on a tank full of 87 gas and then do the same with 91 octane gas. You may find that you actually save money with the higher octane based on the greater fuel efficiency. In any event, using 87 octane gas will not do any damage to the engine so you don't need to worry. But using octane 91 is advisable for longer life and good fuel economy rate.I suggest octane 91.--------------This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

You should have a factory affixed sticker inside gas compartment cover listing premium fuel only or also listed in your owners manual. Otherwise if you notice that you're vehicle is making a pinging sound while accelerating or climbing a hill for instance then you may want to step up to 89 or 93 octane and try to avoid purchasing fuel with ethanol added it's **** and degrades your fuel quality/octane ratio

I recently used 87 grade gas in my 2001 Infiniti I30 and its putting like a lawn mower. Besides the fact of it being a coil pack issue is 93 grade better to use? I had no problems out of 89 or 93

Hey LeDonta,
The octane rating of the gasoline has nothing to do with the "quality" of the gasoline.. quality is purity, quantity of bad "fillers", quantity of good "fillers", and cleanliness of the transportation tanker and the stations tanks in the ground.
the octane rating is a rating of how fast the gas burns in the combustion cycle... the higher the octane rating the slower the gas burns.. and the lower the octane, the faster it burns.. The compression ratio and ignition timing are the main factors in determining what octane an engine requires. The higher the compression ratio and thus, the more advanced the ignition timing, the higher the octane required. Racing engines (as a rule) require a higher octane...
USE WHAT YOUR OWNERS MANUAL SAYS TO USE!!!.. if it says 87,, use it, .. using 93 is a waste of money!!

Was told to use premium 89 octane gas only this true?

This is true. The only time you need to apply gasoline with higher octane is when preignition is present. If it sounds like marbles are bouncing in your engine when you are driving then get higher octane. However if the car is in good mechanical condition (cooling system, oil serviced regularly) then 89 octane is perfect.

Regular unleaded or Premium ?

This is a wide range of fuel types. Minimum Octane level to run decent is normally 87. Up in the northern areas and hilly states I've seen this a little lower. Typically your choices are 87 octane, 89 octane and 93 octane. I recommend using the 89 octane or mid grade to get the best mileage and consistent performance from the vehicle. You will get better mileage from the higher 93 octane or Premium but this is off set by the increased soot and build up over time and the mileage isn't that much better to justify the cost between the Mid and Premium grade fuels.

SEEMS LIKE CAR IS SLUGGISH AND LOOSING POWER WHEN TEMP IS HOT.

id maybe try going back to 87 octane gas cause 93 may make it run better but it will run hotter too and that can cause premature detonation and spark knock

Ideal gasoline

87 octane is ideal for your accent.

It's a little commuter car. It's designed to save you money.
Anything over 87 is just a waste of money, UNLESS your engine is knocking at 87. Then you should step up to the next highest grade.
89 is a made up octane. It's just a mix of the lowest grade and the highest grade. I used to work at a mobil gas station for a year, and the only grades i knew wer 87 and 93, but 89 was an available option. it's just a way for oil companies to benefit off of ignorance.
91 and 93 is for high performance engines, turbo-induction, superchargers, that sort of stuff.
you should be fine sticking with the 87 though, but move up to "89 octane" or 91/93 if your engine knocks a lot.
hope this helps.

Cylinder 1 misfire

Change the spark plug, you might as well change all of them while you are at it.  Don't worry about the half full tank of gas, just run the car as low as you can and then refill with 87.
