Has the 'Check Engine' light come on? I had this problem at 30,000 miles and the trouble codes set were transmission component slipping. Ultimately required replacement of the transmission.

Code 81 is brake switch input circuit.The being stuck in third is a limp mode because of a hard code being set.If you repair or replace the brake switch issue you should be fine on the shifting issue.Good luck and let me know if i can help.
I would check the fuild level and make sure the fluid is bright red. You may also want to replace the transmission filter. Also check the modulator, if so equipped.
CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL.IF ALL IS GOOD YOUR 2 - 3 SHIFT VALVE IS STICKING OR BINDING.GOVERNOR VALVE STICKING.YOU COULD HAVE STICKING OR BINDING ACCUMULATOR VALVE 3 - 2 CONTROL VALVE TV LIMIT VALVE 1 - 2 OR 2 - 3 SHIFT VALVE TRAIN.CHECK THE VACUUM VALVE IF EQUIPPED.USE HAND HELD VACUUM PUMP.PUMP VALVE TO 15 HGS. IF IT HOLD VACUUM OKAY IF DONT HOLD VACUUM VACUUM VALVE NEED REPLACING.
tsb remove dist cap ,clean out breather holes i replaced cap and rotor at the same time. chevy has the problem with the 4.3l astro,s and blazer i have both.fixed the problem when buying the cap and rotor the directions inside will also tell you how to fix
when it gets warm it works fine
