My solution is to get rid of this car immediately!! I had that happen to me. I had my mechanic check it and it was fine about 2 weeks later the car completely died because there is a defect with the 2004 Rav4 2.4l 4cyl. engine. Toyota never recalled this defect and now I am stuck with a car that is worth NOTHING. The top of the engine is put on with a metal/screw that is too soft. It separates and then antifreeze leaks out forcing the car to overheat. There is really no way to fix this besides dropping a new engine. I am stuck without a car and at a total loss. I will NEVER buy a Toyota again. Good luck!
This happens every year to my Toyota RAV4. Go buy a new gas cap. The codes ussualy come up that you need a cat conv or evap system. However, if you put on the new gas cap the lights go off. This is a common thing with 2004-2005 rav4.
