P0305 - Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected
P0306 - Cylinder 6 Misfire Detected

When a misfire occurs, engine speed will fluctuate. If the engine speed fluctuates enough to cause the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor signal to vary, The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Electronic Control Module (ECM) can determine that a misfire is occurring.

When is the code detected?
- Engine Cylinder #5 and #6 is Misfiring.

Symptoms:
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Lack/loss of power
- Hard start
- Engine hesitation

Possible Causes:
- Improper spark plug at cylinder #5 and #6
- Insufficient compression at cylinder #5 and #6
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- The injector circuit is open or shorted at cylinder #5 and #6
- Fuel injector #5 and #6 may be faulty
- Intake air leak at cyli

Possible Solution:
- Perform Injector Service
- Replaced Spark Plug #5 and #6
- Replaced Injector #5 and #6
- Replaced Ignition Coil #5 and #6

Hope helps.

I have a P0456 code on my 2003 Ford Expedition. Where is the vapor purge solenoid or the canister?

The information you are asking for varies depending on how the vehicle is equipped ie. ENGINE SIZE, AUTOMATIC or MANUAL TRANSMISSION, 2-WHEEL DRIVE, 4-WHEEL DRIVE, ALL-WHEEL DRIVE, etc.
With that said, it also deserves mention that there is a Technical Service Bulletin published by Ford Motor Company that applies to the model year and model that you have listed that involves Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0456.

Please note that this bulletin emphasizes the requirement of special equipment to properly diagnose and repair the DTC's listed in the bulletin. Below is a brief (partial) description of the bulletin:

ISSUE
Some vehicles may exhibit a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0442, P0455, P0456, P0457 or P1442 or a "Check Fuel Cap" Lamp illuminated with DTC P0457 for the Evaporative Emission System. This may be caused by loose or leaking hoses, loose or broken fuel cap, a leak at the top of the fuel filler pipe neck, etc.
ACTION
Use the Rotunda Leak Detector Smoke Machine (Part 218-00001) or equivalent, to locate and repair leaks in the Evaporative Emission System.

Checked dtc codes in my ford ranger, found p1401 manufacturer control auxilary emissions control, p0304 p0306 cylinder 4 and 6 misfires. egr valve has been replaced

Check and / or replace plugs, wires, distributor cap, coil / coilpack

Change plugs especially if you have over 50k miles on them.
Wires can sometimes have cracks in them causing misfire.

Hope this helps...

2003 ford escape. 75,000 miles on it. Sputters

What engine do you have?
I have a 2002 Escape with 3.0 V6. It sounds like the ignition is getting damp and the engine is misfiring. If the CEL is flashing, you really shouldn't be driving it. Check the owners manual, but you could damage the engine.
Anyway, go to an Autozone or other parts store. Many will scan your engine for the DTC code for free. This code will give you a clue.
My code was for a for a cylinder misfire. I was close to 100,000 miles, so I replaced the plugs first, then the one coil. It was the coil.

Looking for cylinder diagram/location on 2001 Ford Escape 6 cyl

here's the scoop. There is a TSB that addresses this issue.
First, replace the spark plugs.
Next, replace all 6 COPS, coil on plug. You have to because they feed back into the PCM, Powertrain Control Module and blow the drivers. Then you need to replace the PCM.

This was for 2004-06, but it might apply to yours if it's a 3.0L.

Misfire DTC codes identify which cylinder is misfiring.

Misfire Detection Monitor The Misfire Detection Monitor is an on-board strategy designed to monitor engine misfire and identify the specific cylinder in which the misfire has occurred. Misfire is defined as lack of combustion in a cylinder due to absence of spark, poor fuel metering, poor compression, or any other cause. The Misfire Detection Monitor will be enabled only when certain base engine conditions are first satisfied. Input from the ECT or CHT, MAF and CKP sensors is required to enable the monitor. The Misfire Detection Monitor is also performed during on demand self-test.
  1. The PCM synchronized ignition spark is based on information received from the CKP sensor. The CKP signal generated is also the main input used in determining cylinder misfire.
  1. The input signal generated by the CKP sensor is derived by sensing the passage of teeth from the crankshaft position wheel mounted on the end of the crankshaft.
  1. The input signal to the PCM is then used to calculate the time between CKP edges and also crankshaft rotational velocity and acceleration. By comparing the accelerations of each cylinder event, the power loss of each cylinder is determined. When the power loss of a particular cylinder is sufficiently less than a calibrated value and other criteria is met, then the suspect cylinder is determined to have misfired.
  1. Misfire type A:

Upon detection of a Misfire type A (200 revolutions) which would cause catalyst damage, the MIL will blink once per second during the actual misfire, and a DTC will be stored.

    Misfire type B:

Upon detection of a Misfire type B (1000 revolutions) which will exceed the emissions threshold or cause a vehicle to fail an inspection and maintenance tailpipe emissions test, the MIL will illuminate and a DTC will be stored.

The DTC associated with multiple cylinder misfire for a Type A or Type B misfire is DTC P0300.

    The DTCs associated with an individual cylinder misfire for a Type A or Type B misfire are DTCs P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0305, P0306, P0307, P0308, P0309 and P0310.
