The best way is to take your time...,Set Emerg brake, start vehicle and put into neutral..Engage 4 wheel drive, look at your dash gauge area for 4 wheel drive light to come on..Put truck in reverse and release park brake..,Back up 10ft.slowly..Then put it in drive and pull up 10 ft.slowly then you should be in four wheel drive..
I am by no means an expert but I had the same issue with my 2000 chevy 1500. I bought a new 4x4 switch from the dealer for about $70; it just pops out and back in; it completely fixed the problem including the fact that it would not kick out of 4 wheel drive. Apparently the switch is a very common problem with this make and model.
Had the same problem. Easy fix. Grasp the plastic dashboard piece that goes around the instrument cluster and 4 wheel drive switch and pull off. Remove the 4 wheel drive switch. Unplug wiring harness from back of switch. use small screwdriver and carefully bend all metal tabs in back of switch slightly to one side. Re-install harness and switch back into dash. Should work fine, it just was not getting a connection. Worked great for me.
