Most of the time its is the sending unit in the fuel tank. The test for it is to use a variable resistor that is hooked up to the wiring at the fuel tank and watch the fuel gauge if the gauge works ok thats makes 100% sure its the sending unit. At 245 ohms the gauge should read full, 180 ohms for 3/4 full, 160 ohms for 1/2 tank, 100 ohms for 1/4 tank and 42 ohms for empty. The color of wires at the fuel tank is purple wire and black wire. You can also use fixed value resisters. If the fuel gauge the wires from the sending unit to computer then to gauge for bad connections, shorts, broken wire and bad grounds. If the wires test ok that only leaves insterrment cluster or computer which even most dealers can't test eather one but the insterment cluster would be a more common problem then the computer. But about 95% of the time it will be the fuel level sensor in the gas tank that causes the problem. Good luck.

96 Mercury cougar gas gauge won't work

Cathy, 1996 Mercury cougar gas gauge not working. Simplest thing to check first is your fuel gage fuse, make sure all fuses are good. The ground wire could be corroded/damaged, sending unit in tank faulty, fuel level gauge in cluster faulty. All things can be tested by a good Tech.,diagnosed and estimate for repair.

What would cause a gas gauge to read one thing then read something else and move different times even after feeling the gas tank up .

Three possibilities...
1. Loose wire connection somewhere, probably the tank unit.
2. Faulty instrument panel voltage regulator.
3. Faulty gauge, either panel unit or tank unit.

Bouncing gas guage on 94 bonneville

could be faulty gauge or sending unit in the tank. if you can get ahold of a scan tool, see if the fuel lvel reading on the scan tool agrees with the gauge. if it does than you have a faulty sending unit.if it does not than you may have a faulty gauge.

Gauge stays on empty

If you are referring to the gas gauge, It is one of 3 choices or a combination of them. 1 A bad float in your tank. 2 A faulty sending unit May be in tank or by fuel pump. and 3 loose connection from these to yor dash gauge. Good Luck
