I have a 1997 Ford escort hatchback 1.6 Zetec which has done 170 thousand kilometers.
It is running very rough, when going up hill it doesn't get enough power, it feels as if it is struggling. It idles by itself when in neutral. If the car is warm it will idle up to 3500 revs and stay for a good 30 secs then come back down. When in gear it idles up so the car literally drives itself. When changing gear the car idles by itself again which cannot be good for the clutch.
I have been told it may be the idle control valve or road speed sensor??
I have had several mechanics look at it which are all clueless

I would wait for the milage recommendation. (Unless of course you have an oil or coolant leak that is getting on your timing belt) When you do replace it though, have the tensioner and idler pulleys replaced also. The whole deal can be had as a kit.
The Ford maintenance info for 97 Escort can be found at the below site, where you can download your original owners manual and maintenance schedule for free. It states to replace the camshaft drive belt every 60k. https://www.fleet.ford.com/maintenance/owners_manuals/default.asp
