I have a 99 dodge neon that i bought for very cheap. the speedometer does not work nor does the odometer. so i was going to replace the vehicle speed sensor having checked the instrument panel and seeing it was ok. when i began to inspect the speed sensor i found that there had been a short and the 3 wires running from the speed sensor had melteded together i tried to pull them back and separate them to run new wire but one wire was so shorted it completely disenagrated and i cannot find it within the harness. so i guess my question is this how can i re wire the the speed sensor straight from the source? trying to read the wiring diagram in a chiltons makes no sense cause all the wires splice and run to other sensors and things. any help is greatly appreciated.

SOURCE: po748 can tcc solenoid or vehicle speed sensor cause this code

One question? Did you clear the codes out of the system with a scanner? I believe that's the only way to do it now, unlike the old days when you could rest by disconnecting the battery. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: All dash instruments operate except the digital

this is a problem with alot of chevy cars and trucks the problem if the instrument cluster itself you will have to replace the cluster and it will fix your problem, and the truck has a box that stores the real miles the truck has so when you change out the cluster, once you turn on your key your truck will show your exact mileage it has. hope this helped

2004 Saturn Vue odometer and speedometer occasionally not working

Speedometer
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the vehicle speed based on the information from the body control module (BCM). The engine control module (ECM) calculates the vehicle speed based on the controller area network (CAN) serial data message indicating the wheel reference speed from the electronic brake control module (EBCM). The ECM sends a CAN serial data message to the BCM indicating the vehicle speed. The BCM sends a class 2 message to the IPC indicating the vehicle speed.
The speedometer defaults to 0 km/h (0 mph) when any of the following occur:
• The EBCM detects a malfunction in the vehicle speed sensor circuit.
• The ECM detects a loss of CAN communications with the EBCM.
• The BCM detects a loss of CAN communications with the ECM.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the BCM.

Having the vehicle scanned for codes would probably point you in a correct diagnostic direction .

Replaced input and output speed sensors for erratic speedometer. Now the speedometer remains at 0. Anyone have a suggestion on what else could be wrong?

input and out put speed sensors tell the TCM and the ECM the difference between engine rpms and transmission input roms so that the correct gear ratio can be selected
A speedo sensor reads the out put shaft (drive line ) shaft and refers to road speed for speed and odometer readings and to calculate the fuel consumption rate
it is possible that you have replaced the wrong sensor
Talk with an accredited transmission specialist shop and have the problem diagnosed

How do I check the instrument cluster on a 1996 dodge Dakota?

i believe it has a vehicle speed sensor in the rear diff that is probably your problem as the sensor you replaced in the transmission was probably the output shaft speed sensor

The speedometer and odometer dont work..can this

Sure, it's probably just a loose or broken speedo cable, it runs from the transmission to the firewall. A mechanic can fix it in minutes.

I have a 1997 dodge neon and the speedometer does not work

Need to access the PCM with a scan tool and see if the vehicle speed sensor is still working. If it is, the problem is most likely in the instrument cluster and a junkyard part would be a good solution. If you have no VSS operation, that's your problem.

Why wont my speed odometer work on my 2002 dodge neon rt????please help

The speedometer is driven by the computer which uses the Vehicle Speed Sensor, which is located on the transmission, to determine how fast the vehicle is traveling. It is not uncommon for the VSS to go out unexpectedly, usually the check engine light will come on when it malfunctions, and the computer will lock the transmission in 2nd gear, which will allow you to limp the car in to a repair shop.

I have a 1994 Honda Accord LX sedan and the speedometer just stopped working. My mechanic just put in a transmission that he bought from a junk yard. How do i fix this problem?

I have a 99 accord and my speedometer and odometer did not work. The problem was the VSS vehicle speed sensor. The VSS is located on the transmission. Once I replaced it everything worked fine.
