There is a solenoid on the rear differential that is very common to fail. If you call you GM dealer and tell them you need the rear diff actuator they will now exactly what you are talking about.

Hi,
My name is Ben and I'm your guru, i.e., mentor, an influential teacher or popular expert: a management guru. - origin from Sanskrit, 'weighty, grave' for today.
As you evaluate my advice and suggestions, there are a few things you must keep in mind:
• I did not diagnose your problem and am therefore only able to evaluate what you tell me. For example, if you ask me a fuse location, that doesn't mean that I can tell you the reason why the fuse blew.
• A thorough diagnostic approach involves the use of technical equipment, such as voltage meters. scanning equipment and other sophisticated devices.
• Lastly, fixing one problem can very easily reveal a problem with something that you might consider unrelated. If that happens, you might want to view me as being incompetent. That's why I recommend a diagnostic scan.
Subject: Driving with an inoperative AWD
Customer's exact description: 2003 buick rendezvous AWD light indicating AWD disabled. is
it ok to drive and what are checks should i make or have made to
correct the problem.....
Discussion: Disarming the AWD and its ramifications can lead to an unnecessary expense for a novice mechanic.
The direct answer to your question is 'yes you can continue to drive with an inoperative AWD. However, and I emphasis this point often enough, there is no way of knowing whether or not this is part of an additional problem.
First, I call to your attention the following Technical Bulletin issued by FM at the behest of the U.S. Department of Transportation:
2003 Buick Rendezvous Service Brakes, Hydraulic Service Bulletin 43614
NHTSA: Action Number: 10002373 Service Bulletin Number: 43614
Report Date:
Apr 01, 2004
Component:
Service Brakes, Hydraulic
Summary: Anti-lock brake system (abs) and/or traction control lamp on, all-wheel drive (awd) disabled message displayed, diagnostic trouble codes (dtcs) set. *tt
Unfortunately, I do not have anything more than this summary. Whenever such a notice is issued it points toward an internal parts failure that has shown up in large numbers. The reasons could range from a clutch failure or some other malfunction in the power-train.
I cannot go into the many probabilities because that was not your request. Drive to your closest
AutoZone and get a free code scan for more precise possibilities. Also contact your local Buick dealer and find out more about the aforementioned tech bulletin.
All the best,
Ben

Our 2002 did the same thing. Easy cheap fix! Pull the wheel off and check the wiring that goes to the wheel sensor. You will find after removing a few inches of wrap, a broken wire or two. This could be on either wheel, so check both. Fix the wires back up and you are good to go. Hope this helps!
