There should be an aldl (assembly line data link) plug under the drivers side of the dash. Ground the A and B terminals and turn the key to the run position. Count the number of times the check engine light flashes.

I guess I should have phrased that a little better. You can jump the A and B terminals together with a jumper wire. The B terminal is ground so you are, as elm6 suggested, grounding the A terminal.
Thanks, I had a 1986 Grand am and i had to jumper 2 of the terminals together, so this is a simular opperation
