Fuel pump is in the tank. drain off fuel to below 1/2 tank if you can. makes handling it much easier. DONT DO JUST A FUEL PUMP. replace the hanger assembly. comes as a unit. if you have a shop do this should run about 425.00 plus tax

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the fuel tank filler cap.
  3. Relieve the fuel system pressure as outlined in this section.
  4. Drain the fuel from the fuel tank.
  5. Raise and support the rear end on jackstands.
  6. Remove the fuel inlet and outlet hoses from the sending unit. Be ready to catch any spilled fuel.

  8. Using a brass punch and hammer, remove the sending unit retaining lockring by tapping it counterclockwise. Fig. 5: Carefully pull the fuel pump module/sending unit out of the fuel tank - stepfuel pump replacement - 91075p03.jpgthe fuel tank mounted on the vehicle 91075p03.jpg

  9. Remove the sending unit, which incorporates the electric fuel pump, along with the O-ring seal from the fuel tank. Discard the O-ring.
  10. Remove and discard the pump inlet filter.
  11. Disengage the fuel pump terminal wires.
  12. Remove the pump outlet hose and clamp.
  13. Unfasten the pump top mounting bracket nut and remove the pump. To install:
  14. Install a new inlet filter on the pump. fuel pump replacement - 86745g55.gifThis is the proper positioning of the fuel pump module assembly inside the fuel tank 86745g55.gif

  15. Assemble the pump and bracket. Connect the hose and wiring.
  16. Install the unit and new O-ring in the tank. The rubber stopper on the end of the fuel return tube must be inserted into the cup in the fuel tank reservoir.
  17. Install the lockring. Carefully tap it into place until it seats against the stop on the tank.
  18. Connect the hoses.
  19. Engage the wiring.
  20. Lower the vehicle, fill the tank, run the enginefuel pump replacement - 86745g52.gifor leaks.

  1. Drain and remove the fuel tank as outlined in this section.
  2. Using tool 6856 or its equivalent, remove the module locknut which is threaded onto the fuel tank. The module will spring up when the nut is removed.
  3. Remove the module. To install:
  4. Install a new gasket and place the module into the opening in the fuel tank.
  5. Position a new locknut on top of the module and tighten the nut using tool 6856 or its equivalent to 40 ft. lbs.     Throttle Body Injection Problem



    Fuel Pump


    REMOVAL & INSTALLATION



        Disconnect the negative battery cable.
          Remove the fuel tank filler cap.
            Using a siphon hose, drain the fuel tank below 1⁄4 full.
              Block the front wheels and raise and support the rear of the vehicle with jackstands.
                Remove the fuel inlet and outlet hoses from the sending unit Be ready to catch any spilled fuel.
                  Remove the sending unit wires.
                    Using a brass punch and hammer, remove the sending unit retaining lockring by tapping it counterclockwise.
                      Remove the sending unit, which incorporates the electric fuel pump, along with the O-ring seal from the fuel tank. Discard the O-ring.
                        Remove and discard the pump inlet filter.
                          Disconnect the fuel pump terminal wires.
                            Remove the pump outlet hose and clamp.
                              Remove the pump top mounting bracket nut and remove the pump.

                              To install:

                                Install a new inlet filter on the pump.
                                  Assemble the pump and bracket. Connect the hose and wiring.

We have replaced fuel pump in a 98 ego metro LSi drove home ran fine. Now it won't start any ideas why it won't start.
Pam, was the fuel filter replaced at the same time that the fuel pump was replaced? If not, replace the fuel filter. Often, the filter will get clogged with debris. When that happens, the fuel pump will be ruined. Replacing the pump without replacing the fuel filter can ruin the new pump. It is also possible that your new fuel pump is defective. Now that most replacement parts are made in China and the third world, there is virtually NO quality control. I'm a professional mechanic and defective brand new parts are a BIG problem in this industry. Was the fuel pump relay replaced when the new fuel pump was installed? Always install a new relay, as a failing [your old] fuel pump will often damage the relay. This will cause problems with the new fuel pump. I would advise that you install a fuel pressure test gauge to the engine. This will allow you verify whether or not the engine is receiving enough fuel pressure. If the pump works but the pressure is low, also check the fuel pressure regulator. The web links below should help you.

FYI, there is also a "sock" style pre-filter on the fuel pump. This also needs to be replaced any time that you replace the fuel pump.
