Ok here goes !!!!!!! i have 2 impalas with no heat(2003)3.1 litre had thermostat changed 2 yrs. ago. worked good 1 st. winter but no more. temperature gauge really high when blowing cold air then gauge drops starts blowing warm air. if i let it run long enough i will eventuaaly get hot air maybe 20 t0 30 minutes before it gets warm!!!! car #2 2003 impala ls 3.4 litre just started this winter never blows warm air always cool!!! thak you 4 your time help would be appreciated!!!!

that's a possibility. Typically if the thermostat is stuck open on newer vehicles the check engine light will come on and have a P0128 code for low coolant temperature.
"The car didn't overheat" you may have a blown head gasket, also if it sustained heat for a prolonged time , the head may have warped. Check coolant level.
During the winter time the engine may not produce enough heat to go half way. You can modify this by installing a hotter thermostat. But I would not go more that 20 degrees F though, or you could create issues for summer driving.
check to see if you have a leak in your heater core,and if the heater core is not leaking you might have a leak on the intake gasket or the head gasket
