I had the same problem and had it towed to the local dodge dealer. The problem was that it needed a new fuel pump. It's a fairly big job since the pump is located in the gas tank (what a brilliant idea). I had it done and it cost nearly $700. Still love the car!
According to the parts book, the filter comes with the plastic lines attached, and should be in front of the gas tank. It makes a difference if the van is a long or short wheelbase model. Some models after 1996 had the filter in the tank.
Sounds like you got a tank of bad gas. That would easily cause your issues. Start by draining as much as you can, put a can of Seafoam in there, add a few gallons of fresh gas, drive to the gas station and tank up, and run that tank down until your gas light comes on before adding more. You may end up needing a fuel filter or plugs again, but with minimal run time on the bad gas, you'll probably be fine.
It should be found next to the gas tank on the right side, under the sliding door of the
passenger side of the van. The fuel filter is cylindrical and about five
inches
Please restate your problem, or confirm what I think is your problem from the following-
1) Your headlights work OK meaning the battery is charged. 2) The engine turns over with the key, but will not start.
If both conditions above are correct, then toyotech6 is very likely right. And if the engine starts but does not continue running, then be suspect of the fuel pump or fuel filter (assuming the gas tank has sufficient gas in it.). If it does not start, then be suspect of a failed igniton module or other probelm. You'll need a scan tool to find the problem.
possible bad fuel pump. check fuel pump relay under hood. drivers side fuse panel. swap fuel pump relay with another identical relay to rule out possible bad relay. listen for whining sound back by fuel tank. the fuel pump is in the fuel tank. Another option....you can also check the pressure in the fuel rail, but be careful not to squirt gas in your eyes or face.
undo fuel pipe where it exits the fuel pressure regulater and turn engine over , use bucket and rag to catch pumped fuel , do this for half gallon and reconnect ,, then take spark plugs out and clean with easy start (eather) and replace , should start fine now ,
sounds like a possible pluged fuel filter or a tired fuel pump. the pump is cooled by the gas. so if you work it at 1/4 tank or below it tends to get hot. but towing may make it hot anyway. check fuel pressure and the replace the fuel filter
gettn fuel to fuel rail?
