Question about 1992 Ford Ranger

1992 Ford Ranger 4x4 Front right ball joint replacement question: Does the spindle need to be removed to remove the drive shaft? Any tips on spindle removal? All bearings, spacers etc are off and spindle nuts have been remove, but not having any luck with the spindle. Have tried anti-seize then 2x4 and hammer with no success.

hit the steering knuckle where the ball joint shaft goes through it while u have the wedge/pickle fork inserted, u do this on the round side of the knuckle, this is what is called a "Morse Taper" hitting it distorts the hole a little and that lets the joint pop free. You need at least a 5 pound ball pen for this to work..

Approx.$250 in parts & rest is labor. Probably 3 to 4 hrs labor at most, even at 5 hrs labor, that's $100/hr labor. It must include alignment after the repairs, correct? Not sure what your going rate for labor is in your area. Probably wouldn't hurt to call around for a second opinion& estimate just to be sure.

Jack the car up, pull the wheel, take off the brake caliper and the rotor. Take both ball joint nuts off. Take one tie -rod end nut off. You need a ball joint separator tool and a sledge hammer. Inspect your ball joints and tie rod end while your at it. It's about a 2 hour job or so. Good luck! Phil

Lower Control Arm

The lower control arm is a two-piece welded unit with a riveted ball joint. A conventional rubber bushing is used for the rear lower control arm pivot. The front lower control arm bushing is mounted vertically.


REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Some special tools are required to perform this operation including, a front hub spindle removal tool and a suitable ball joint separator tool.

WARNING Do not hammer or pry ball joint from knuckle. Failure to use recommended tools may cause damage to the ball joint and seal.
See Figure 1

  1. Raise the vehicle and suitably support by the frame allowing the control arms to hang free.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire assembly.
  3. Remove the steering gear outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
  4. Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the control arm.
  5. Remove the front drive axle shaft nut and washer.
  6. Use a suitable front hub spindle removal tool to Push the axle splines back out of the front wheel drive shaft bearing.
  7. Remove the drive axle from the transaxle.

Drive axle joint seal protectors should be used anytime service is performed on or near the drive axles. Failure to observe this could result in joint or seal failure.
  1. Place a modified inner drive joint seal protector on the drive axle joints.
  2. If equipped, remove the ABS wheel speed sensor jumper harness.
  3. Remove and discard the cotter pin, then loosen the nut from the ball stud.
  4. Remove the pinch bolt and the control arm mounting bolts, then remove the control arm from the vehicle.

Hi, i have a ford ranger 1992 4x4. i want to replace the 4 ball joint. i take off everything. i just wonder and can i take off both solid axle shaft so i can take off the ball joint


The steering knuckle has to be removed so you can use a ball-joint press to remove and install the ball joints. The drive axles must be removed so there will be enough room to get the steering knuckle to drop down far enough so it can be removed.

Removal
  1. Raise the front of the vehicle and install safety stands.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire assembly. Refer to Section 04-04 .
  1. Remove the disc brake caliper (2B120) from the rotor and wire it out of the way. Refer to Section 06-03 .
  1. Remove the dust cap, cotter pin, nut retainer, nut, washer and front wheel bearing (1216).
  1. Remove the rotor from the front wheel spindle (3105).

  1. Remove bearing cone and roller (1201) and wheel hub grease seal (1190). Discard the seal.
  1. Remove front disc brake rotor shield (2K004). Refer to Section 06-03 .
  1. Disconnect the steering linkage from the integral front wheel spindle and spindle arm by removing the cotter pin and nut and then removing the front wheel spindle tie rod from the spindle arm with Tie Rod End Remover TOOL-3290-D or equivalent.
  1. Remove the cotter pin and castellated nut from the lower ball joint stud.
  1. Remove the nut from the axle clamp bolt and remove the bolt from the axle.
  1. Remove the camber adjuster from the upper ball joint stud and axle beam. If required, use Ball Joint Removing Tool D81T-3010-B or equivalent to remove adjuster.

    Strike the inside area of the axle as shown to pop lower ball joints loose from the axle beam.

Removal
  1. Remove the front wheel spindle (3105) and ball joint assembly from the axle. Refer to Wheel Spindle, F-150, F-250, F-350 in the Removal and Installation portion of this section.
  1. NOTE: Lower ball joint must be removed first.

    Install the front wheel spindle in a vise and remove the snap ring from the lower ball joint.
  1. Remove the lower ball joint from the front wheel spindle using U-Joint Tool T74P-4635-C and Receiver Cup D81T-3010-A5 or equivalent for F-150. Use Ball Joint Remover T94T-3010-AH for F-250 and F-350.
  1. Turn the forcing screw clockwise until the ball joint is removed from the front wheel spindle.
  2. CAUTION: Do not heat the ball joint or the front wheel spindle to aid in removal.
    Assemble U-joint tool and cup on the upper ball joint, and turn forcing screw clockwise until ball joint is removed from the front wheel spindle.


    Installation

      NOTE: Upper ball joint must be installed into the front wheel spindle first.

      NOTE: Individual ball joint tools are included in Ball Joint Adapter Set D81T-3010-A or equivalent.

      To install the upper ball joint, assemble C-frame assembly, Ball Joint Receiver Cup D81T-3010-A5 and Installation Cup D81T-3010-A1 and D81T-3010-A3 or equivalents inside cup D81T-3010-A4 or equivalent in position on the front wheel spindle.
    1. Turn forcing screw clockwise until ball joint is seated.

How do I replace left front lower ball joint


i assume its a twin i beam, so remove tire , brake calipers and secure, remove splash shield and cotter pins at ball joints and tie rod, remove holding nuts and peparate tie rod then spindle assembly, a ball joint separator works here, then remove c clip holding ball joint and press out (need a ball joint press here), press new joint in ( tip , stick it in the freezer for an hour or so) then reassemble front end

How to remove upper and lower ball joins on a 4x4 bronco full size 1986


For Lower & Upper Ball Joint Step by Step :

For That you use a C-clamp style ball joint press to remove the ball joint from the suspension arm-note the location of the receiver cup ! For installation of the ball-joint, use the same tool when pressing the ball joint into the suspension arm-again, note the location of the receiver cup.

Step by Step :

  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely, with jackstands.
  2. Remove the spindle and the ball joint assembly from the vehicle.
  3. Remove the snapring from the ball joint. Using a ball joint removal tool, remove the ball joint from the spindle. Do not heat the ball joint or the axle to aid in removal.
  4. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Torque the ball joint stud nut to 85-110 ft. lbs. for 1983-89 Ranger and Bronco II.

This is usually the same on all front wheel drive cars..

Remove the wheel

Remove the brake caliper

Remove the brake rotor

Remove the spindle nut

Remove the wheel bearing assembly (usually 3 bolts)

-The next step may be optional, depends on the car-
Unbolt the lower ball joint (under the A-frame, some are riveted, if so, drill them out and chisel or just chisel them off with a metal chisel, sometimes you can cut the rivet heads off with a sawzall then pry it apart from the a-frame)

Pull the wheel bearing assembly from the spindle of the CV half shaft.
(Sometimes you need a wheel puller)

Once its loose, all you have to do it yank it out, and push the new one in. Make sure the new one pops in and is seated firmly.

Reverse steps for re-assembly. If you took the ball joint loose and it was riveted, use hardened steel bolts and nuts with lock washers to replace it, or buy a new ball joint, they aren't that expensive and it will come with bolts.

Installation of the upper and lower ball joints on a 1999 ford ranger ???


Ford Ranger Ball Joints 1993 through 1997Ford Rangers from '93 to '97 2WD have an "I-beam" front suspension as opposed to the upper and lower control arms that most vehicles have. The '93 to '97 4WD Rangers don't have the "I-beams", they have axles. After 1997 Ford got rid to the twin "I-beam" suspension in the Rangers and started using upper and lower control arms.
The ball joints are pressed into the spindle, and the spindle must be removed to replace the ball joints. The ball joints can't be replaced with the spindle in the vehicle. The wheel, brake caliper, brake rotor and tie rod are all attached to the spindle, and all four items must be removed to get the spindle off. Up until the point that the ball joints get removed from the spindle, it's not that hard a job. But getting the ball joints out of the spindle can be difficult, if not impossible unless you know how to do it. But that gets explained in these instructions.

You will need metric sockets, and a breaker bar for this job. Channel lock pliers, diagonal cutting pliers and needle nose pliers are a must, along with a small, flat chisel, a hammer, and a 3 or 5 pound hammer. Buy some anti-seize compound and thread locker along with your new ball joints. I also had to use a 27mm impact socket and a propane torch with mapp gas.
I'd have hand cleaner, paper towels, and a trash bag right with you so you can clean your hands right at the vehicle.
REMOVE THE WHEEL
1. Loosen the lug nuts with the wheel on the ground before you jack the truck up. Just loosen the lug nuts, don't take the lug nuts off before jacking or supporting the truck.
2. Set the emergency brake, and/or chock the wheels. Jack the truck up. Put a jack stand under the frame.
3. Remove the lug nuts and take off the wheel. I use the wheel to sit on while doing this job.

REMOVE THE CALIPER

1. Remove the brake caliper by removing the two, 13mm bolts on the back side. After that, I pry the caliper up, from the bottom, first on one side then the other to get it unstuck. Then I set the brake caliper over the torsion or stabilizer bar so it's not hanging from the brake hose.
2. Remove the two 15mm bolts that hold the frame that the caliper bolts to. Note: These bolts have thread locker on them and you should replace the bolts with thread locker. Since this part holds the caliper on, you don't want the bolts coming loose. Take the brake pads out of the bracket. They will probably just fall out later if you don't take them out now.

REMOVE THE ROTOR
1. Now the rotor can be removed by taking off the dust cap and removing the cotterpin, nut, and washer. I use a metal chisel with a hammer to separate the dust cap around the edge. Work little by little around the edge to pop off the cap.
2. Remove the cotter pin from the end of the spindle and take the spindle nut off. You probably don't need a socket to remove this nut. The nut is for the tension on the wheel bearings, and even though your wheel bearings should be tightened quite snug, the nut should not be tightened real hard.
3. Remove the washer, and pull the caliper forward. The outer wheel bearing should slide out a little bit. Take it out. Have plenty of paper towels handy because you will get covered with grease.
4. Pull the rotor off and clean the grease off the spindle. You'll need to get the grease off the spindle because you will be handling the spindle to get the ball joints out.

Hello;
The Ford motors are pretty good. I had 280K on a 2.9 V-8 that only needed the oil changed every 3K. Unless you have fluctuatuation in the timing then you should be ok.
These engines use a chain rather than a belt and have excellent life.

How to change ball joints on 1997 2500 4x4 dodge diesel


Not hard, you'll need a special socket to get the axle nut off and getting the bearing out of the spindle is usually a real chore. Since it sounds like the spindle is already out, you might be able to do it in a press.

To get the ball joints out of the spindle, drive them out with a hammer. If you need to get the ball joint out of the axle, strike the axle next to where the ball joint taper is with a large hammer. That will usually distort the axle material enough (for a split second) to let the tappered section loose.
