Car won't start. Don't know if battery or starter

My truck (manual 5-speed, 1999 s10) would not start for me. First the motor started to turn over, then it whirred or whined rather than crank. It whirred/whined as long as I turned the key. I kept trying, but it never started.

I got another driver to give me a boost with jumper cables. Would not crank. Still only whirred/whined.

I only got it started by pushing the truck off.

I tried this morning the same thing. The motor seems to start then the whine/whir and no start. No clicking noise only high-pitched whir.

The lights and windshield wipers all work. The battery is about 4 months old.

What could be the problem?

It's your starter. I've had the same damn problem on the same damn vehicle and figured it out after replacing everything but the windshield wipers... Replace your starter and give the the thing the old what for afterwords... I'm ready to drive mine into a pine thicket and leave it there. It's always something...

I have a 95 honda civic ex,wont start.ran fine yesterday,wont start this morning.battery is fully charged,new cap and rotor.would do u think might b my problem

if it wont turn over 1st check the ground s on the car and the battery 1st. your battery can be fully charged and the car will not start even over night this can happen. then look at the starter. Note: if you have over 109K on the car and the timing belt has never been replaced you will need to have this checked as well.

If the lights still glow sharply,

Won't turn over

Even though all your other electrical bits are working it could be that your battery doesn't have enough juice to crank the engine. It doesn't take much power to run the radio, lights, etc, but cranking the engine requires the battery to have a very strong charge. If your battery is more than 5 years old, that's very likely the issue. I'd start there. Also, be sure to check the battery terminals and ground for corrosion and clean if necessary. If replacing the battery doesn't solve the problem it could be the starter solenoid or a loose electrical connection somewhere.

Where is the starter relay located on a 2006 Mercury Grand Marquis

Check under the surge tank near the battery or in a box with all other relays.

Hi, have a toyota avalon, tried starting the car , it won't start, but then the starter engaged and won't turn off evenwithout the key, disconnected the battery and it stopped , when the batte

It sounds like you have a bad actuator. This is attached to the starter and has a solonoid that pushes the starter motor gears into the engine gear. If the solonoid is faulty this may happen. Also check alignment of the same.

I can't get my land rover discovery 1999 to start!I go to turn it over and it acts like it wants to start but it won't.I have replaced the fuel filter, the fuel pump, put a new battery in it,and a start

Sounds like a dead short between the starter and the battery. Check the cables under the hood for anything that has rubbed through.

However, it is more likely to be the control line to the solenoid that is shorting out. Trace that line from the solenoid up to the firewall first, than drop the panel under the steering wheel and look there. Use a multimeter set to ohms with one probe on a solid part of the frame and the other probe to the solenoid wire - there should NOT be any reading. If there is, the wire is earthing out

My 1999 Volkswagon beetle won't start and i replacestarter. Now I'm geting a clicking noise where before Iwasn't. battery is good had that tested. It's at 84% but the car has a push button...

You say you renewed or was the starter a second hand one because you say when you turn it over you hear a clicking noise , that's the solanoid on the starter motor where it not turning the starter over , a little check to do is put the car in 4 gear handbrake off and push it a bit until you hear the engine turn and then try and start it if still the same check and replace the starter as I don't know if yours is new or second hand

88 s10 2.8 5 speed have power to lights, blower, radio, but wont turn over when turning key no clicking nothing wont even start or turn over by crossing solenoid

Since you have power to your accessories, here are a few more things to consider:
1: Automatic transmission not in park or the neutral safety switch is faulty
2: On manual transmissions clutch pedal not depressed or or clutch start switch failure
3: Broken or loose wires in the starting circuit. Inspect all wires and connectors at the battery, starter solenoid, and ignition switch
4: Starter motor pinion jammed in flywheel ring gear. Manual transmission. place transmission in gear and rock the vehicle to manually turn the engine. Remove starter and inspect pinion and flywheel

I have a 1998 Chevy Cavalier that I can not figure out why it won't start. The following list of parts are brand new: Battery, PCM, Park Neutral Safety Switch, Alternator, Ignition Switch, and finally...

Your car has a sealed transmission, in order to check it you have to go to the dealer or a transmission

shop, its not owner servicable. takes dextron vi, 4 speed 7.4 quarts, 3 speed 4quarts

And as far as the no start, are your plugs getting voltage, if not check your coil, if there is no spark

to your plugs the car will not fire up. good luck!
