One of the engine pulleys is bad. It's difficult to say which without examining the vehicle personally. It could be the idler pulley, tensioner pulley, or just about any component that is pulley driven on the front of the engine. With the engine off and cool, place a small white line on each of the pulleys. You can use white out, or just about anything. Have someone then start the engine (with the hood up) and examine the pulleys to see which one isn't spinning. The other components are spinning, and one is not. The white (yellow whatever) spot will help to see which one is seized. The belt is rubbing on it causing the rubber smell. Be very careful as the belt has the potential to break causing an injury. It may be the power steering pump itself and will need to be replaced. My car is hard to turn, it makes an awful noise and is smoking, it smells like burnt rubber, if i continue to drive it what will happen

Hi Debbie,
Not sure with out looking at it, But from what you posted if hard to turn
sounds like your power steering punp aint working , ant if smoking and smells like burnt rubber sounds like pumps locked up, (pully not turning) and if so continuing to drive it could leave you on side of road if it runs a cerpintine belt , that kind of belt runs every thing and if breaks water pump stops flowing water motor will over heat, you should realy have someone look at that for you.

When i turn the wheel my car makes a loud noise and smokes, it smells like burnt rubber, is it safe to drive it

Sounds like the power steering pump is locking up and the belt is slipping. Get it checked out before you drive it.

2001 ford escape has horrible rubber smell and bad noise

Remove the drive belt on the alternator and see if you can spin the pulley freely. Check for bearing noise or knocks in the alternator . If it is hard to turn then replace the alternator . While the belt is off check all other units and pulleys to see if they turn freely. Now check the drive belt and smell it If it smells of burnt rubber then replace it as it is what the smell is all about.

Sqealing

Two things to check. If your car has a harmonic pulley on the crank shaft check that it is not slipping on the rubber insert and squealing. Second point is when there is no need for power steering ie straight ahead or idling there is no load on the pump so it will feel ok but as soon as you move the position of the steering wheel the valves close off and the pump comes under load. If the drive belt only drives the power pump and it broke then I would suspect a problem in the pump. Check that the belt is the correct size for the pulley groove as if it is too small the belt will run on the bottom of the pulley and slip, and squeal.

Belt sqealing on my 1999 cougar.

Do you know which belt is making this noise? Usually it's the power steering belt, and sometimes it's the alternator belt. The power steering belt will make noise turning the steering wheel when stationary, the alternator belt will slip as you quickly rev the engine by blipping the throttle. In either case tightening the belt to the specified tension will fix the problem.
