The lockup function in the Torque converter is not functioning
correctly. Your RPM's rise when you come out of Overdrive. Do you have
the button in the shifter that turns ON/OFF the Overdrive? You don;t
get it at startup since you can't go into O/D till the engine is warmed
up-bet as soon as you go into closed loop mode (when the O/D can
work)-the light starts. Hopefully it's electrical outside the trans-if
it's the converter itself-the trans has to be opened. Check TSB on this problem. Ut has to do with a transmission oil pump defect and repair procedure.
This is something I recommend having a Ford Dealer do since they have the experience with the job. Keep us updted.

Transmission - A4LD, 4R44E/4R55E, 5R55E - Torque Converter Slip - Diagnostic Trouble Code (Dtc) 628 Or P0741 Stored In Memory
Ford:
1985 to 1993 Mustang
1987 to 1988 Thunderbird
Lincoln-Mercury:
1988 Cougar
Light Truck:
1985 to 1990 Bronco II

ISSUE:
Some vehicles may experience excessive torque converter slippage, torque
converter not engaging, or Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 628 or P0714
stored in memory. This may be caused by damage to the fluid pump support
seal and/or to the groove on the pump where the seal is located.
ACTION:
Inspect the fluid pump seal for damage. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
Several things can be going on here and you hope the real intended reason isn't it. If this code comes up and the sensers are working and the wires aren't pinched and you don't have a teenaged driver (or a person that drives like one) reving the engine in neutral and dropping the shifter in gear with it revved up. Does the car drive normally or does it stall after driving to high gear and slowing down? Does the car have alot of miles on it? What kind of car is it? make year model engine size transmission type. ( overdrive or not). It's newer than 1980 but that's not much to go on. What country was it sold new in? Remember this is the worldwide web? Theirs speed sensers that can be addresssed from outside the transmission, They can fail and lie both. Does the car drive differently after the codes are cleared and do the codes come right back or can you drive it awhile till the fast driver gets ahold of it?
Welcome to Fixya
Check first if transmission has low fluid. If there is enough fluid then you migh need to check the transmission itself. A torque converter is what couples the engine to the transmission. It acts like a clutch and allow the engine to drive the
transmission. At slow engine speeds, like at idle, it slips so the
engine will not stall while the transmission is in gear. As engine speed
(RPM) increases it allows the engine to drive the transmission.

I understand the Torque converter , my problem is the code. Do you have any idea what needs to be done to correct the code. I have reset the light but after a week it came back on, and the fluid is full
I have a 2000 Buick LaSabre. My service engine light is on. It was on last week and the code reader stated " Torque Converter CKT Performance or stuck off. What am I looking at ? Code # of P0741
The Buicks don't have an Overdrive button, normally just the trucks do (GM). The code is P0741. Shows a "CKT" problem...I have never entered a D?? something code. Are you sure you are knowledgeable about this product or are you in Pakistan reading from some book ???
The transmission seems to be running fine also. No slippagenoted or high RPM at a standstill
