My 1996 toyota 's ignition locks and I have been told there is something I can do that unlocks it. I heard there was a way that has to do with the brake and pushing the stick shift button in some way together . It can be so frustrating. By the way love my Toyota it has 608,000 KM!!!!!

page 14 of your owners manual shows how to lock unlock the child proof setup on door -----open door and by latch will see the the lock move to unlock position ! CAUTION LOCKING WITH REAR DOOR CHILDPROTECTORS Turn the lock knob to the "LOCK" position as shown on the label. This feature allows you to lock a rear door so it can be opened from the outside only, not from inside. We recommend using this feature.... the link is a copy of your owners manual 1996 Toyota Camry Owners Manual
I had the same problem and after reading this thread contacted an automobile lock smith. He stated that the first thing to do is get a new key made to the factory key code. The metal in the key is softer than the metal pins in the lock tumbler, and when you make copies from an old key it copies the wear plus some. I did not have the key code fob that came with the car so the lock smith told me to take the VIN# to the Toyota dealer and they can cut a key based upon the stored code for my 4Runner.
$10 later it works fine with the new key and a heck of a lot cheaper than spending the $200 to have the ignigition drilled and replaced.
Lock then unlock the doors with the power lock button, with all doors closed (key not in ignition). If this doesnt work, try again using the key to lock and unlock from the driver door, with all doors closed.
try to turn steering wheel a tiny fraction when you insert ker and try to turn it ,do both at same time my echo did a similar thng and this worked for me I hope this helps

Is your steering wheel locked? Turn the key as much as you can, then turn the steering wheel and see if it releases the lock. You should be able to completely turn the key after this.
