I have a 2003 Monte Carlo SS and I also have that same problem when I shift it into reverse, sometimes I have to bypass it, put it in Neutral and HOPE where I parked it, it will roll backwards so I don't have to put it in reverse, but what makes it even more weird is that it sometimes happens in "DRIVE", wth ?!?!?!?!?!

SOURCE: 1991 Caprice No reverse. Moves in neutral. All forward gears OK.

What engine? Rear wheel drive ?Sounds like shift linkage or cable out of adjustment slightly. Have a look at where cable or rod attaches to transmission for adjustment. If not sure of what your looking for get back to me with info.

SOURCE: 2006 Altima won't shift into reverse or park

Is there any warning lights or malfunction besides this?? There are three main parts that may cause this: Park/Neutral safety switch(located on the transmission), Brake pedal switch(located at the brake pedal), Shift lock solenoid(located below the shifter). P/N safety switch prevents the shifter from shifting out of (P) or shifting into (R/P) while vehicle is in motion. Brake pedal switch sends a signal to release the shifter lock to shift out of park. Shift lock, locks the shifter as describe above and is located at the shifter base. I recommend inspection/replacement of the shift lock solenoid and P/N safety switch as its an intermitted problem. Hopefully this helps

The problem that I could see is the transmission/shift solenoid. The solenoid thing is located inside the transmission. The repair should run $200-$250 or there abouts. If you don't fix it quickly though, you will wreck the transmission and you don't want to know how much that costs!

You may also contact the manufacturer for second opinion.

Hope this helps and have a great evening!

Can you adjust the neutral safety switch in an 85 monte carlo ss

Yes...all you need to do is loosen the screws that hold it on and slide it. If you can't get it to adjust, it may be worn out though. Always check after moving the switch to make sure that it still will not start in gear and that the reverse lights are still working.

Hard shifting from 1st to 2nd

I have been hearing a possible solution for this problem is changing the oil filter in the trans oil pan. But ive been looking all over for a solutionand thats the only legit one ive found. It said when the oil gets clogged it doesnt flow to the transmission as nicely as normal therefore leading to lagging changes

Dead key all lights are ok carwont start no click click click

try starting it in neutral. sometimes the neutral safety switch thinks you are just outside of park (aka in reverse). this switch will not allow the car to start in any gear except park and neutral. also, try shifting firmly in and out of park several times. this may trip the switch. good luck
