Bmw E30, 316, 55 kw, 1987, M10 with carburater

After cold start engine runs like on 3 cylinders. Its like there is no gas so I have to press gas pedal. Engine takes gas but still runs very bad and out of exhaust system I can see black smoke.
As temperature rises engine runs smother I'd say normal. Stil after longer driving on higher rpm inside exhaust pipe is black.

Sounds like you're running rich.

First, change the air filter, and check that the air intake isn't blocked somewhere.

If that doesn't sort it out, it's the carb. They have an automatic choke (cold start), which could be sticking on and causing problems.

One thing it isn't is the timing belt (sorry Satanscash) as this engine doesn't have one... and even if it did, failure of the belt results in a very dead engine!

First check and replace the spark plugs, I suggest having a compression test done at the same time to make sure the piston rings arent bad.
Next, youwill ahve to clean and service the carb because is sounds like its not getting the right amount of gas.
If the car always runs poorly it is most likely the timing belt that is bad and will need to be replaced

No spark in cold weather

what engine, what country. what year, (3 strikes, and out)
we cant guess. 2001 to 2014.
4.7 L 240 hp (179 kW) V8 (2001-04)
4.7 L 282 hp (210 kW) V8 with VVT-i (2005)
4.7 L 273 hp (204 kW) V8 with VVT-i (2006-07)
no spark at all cylinders, check them all.
if all are dead, the $9 scan tool tells me why, with DTC Pxxxx
ever done a tune up ever? if not , why not now.
tune ups, correct bad spark and bad filters.

no spark winter, that is because, its cold and damp
and spark parts just hate damp when parts are old, 1920 to now.
If it runs now.
is the CEL glowing at any time running.
yes, why not scan it, got P0300s or P0301 to 8?

87 325 runs good when

It's the automatic choke!

The choke is "closed" or barely open... When cold, the engine needs a RICH mixture (more gasoline, less air). When the engine warms up, it requires a LEAN mixture (less gas, more air).

It is probably creating BLACK tailpipe smoke ... that means unburnt gasoline. (Blue smoke is OIL, white smoke is WATER).

Put the parking / emergency brake ON.
1. Remove air cleaner assembly from intake, use a carb cleaner spray or throttle body spray cleaner and spray just a little. (AutoZone $5)
2. Find the accelerator2.gif arm under the hood.
3. start car, rev the engine to make sure how to operate the accelerator from under the hood.
4. Carefully spray into carb / throttle body and work the accelerator ... don't let the engine die...
5. Watch out for "backfire"... it may create a small flame out of the carb. It will extinguish itself in one second.

6. You may need to do this two, three times.
7. Add a "complete fuel system2.gif cleaner" to your next tank of gas ($8).

That's it! ... pretty cheap, too.

Hope this helps!

Gas is mixing with oil

If gais getting in the oil there is only one reason, it is getting by the rings, causes are always rich cylinder conditions such as cold start mode remains on due to a defective ECT sensor, also defective fuel injector(s) will cause this issue, cold running engine from a stuck open thermostat can also be a contributing factor.

Hi I'm looking for cylinder head torque settings for a 1992 BMW 316/318 e36

BMW cylinder torque setting all models

According to my service manual as follows.

Cyl head to engine block (torx e12 M10 bolts)

Stage 1 30nm (22 ft – lb)
Stage 2 + 90 degrees
Stage 3 + 90 degrees

Cyl head to lower timing chain cover 10nm (89in – lb)

The tightening sequence is from inside to outside crossover as normal. Loosening sequence is from outside to inside crossover. Remember to set torque wrench at low setting and work gradually up through the whole sequence until you get the desired torque.
