The heat in my '02 Mazda MPV works only sporadically. There is plenty of air blowing through vents, but it is usually cold. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Do you notice any water leaking from under the dash on the passenger side that causes the floor mats to get wet? The leak (if any) would not be heavy or consistent. It's easy to not even notice it, or maybe you have felt a wet spot but you explained it away as a drink spill or something? While it could be something else, but if I were you I would flush the HEATER CORE. The symptom you describe is exactly what happens when a heater core is clogged. The wet spot starts happening means the clog is progressing and at any time you could be driving on the freeway in the bliss of utter cluelessness when the heater core explodes and 10 seconds later the cab fills with blinding white smoke and you can't see your hand in front of your face. A very deadly situation to be in ar 65 MPH... If you catch the problem at any time before it explodes you can save yourself a ton of money cause replacing a heater core is timely and expensive. A flush is a cakewalk, Check out youtube and search "heater core explodes while driving" it SCARY but there is a ton of videos showing how to flush the core. good luck.

Rear area of mpv receives cold air but not heat.

That is usually a blend door problem. One of the doors is stuck in the cold position only. Happens a lot after a battery disconnect. Replace the rear blend door and that should solve your problem.

My 2004 Mazda MPV AC does not seem to be working it blows air out but not as cold as it should be - any ideas - it seemed cold enough last week

My 2004 MPV was just diagnosed with a corroded aluminum line to the rear cabin air-con unit. It cost me $50 to get the unit leak-checked. Also got a $700 estimate to replace the line.

2004 Mazda MPV cabin air is just not getting hot enough.

If changing the thermostat didn't work, have the heater control valve checked, it may not be opening all the way to let the coolant circulate thru the heater core fully.

Its just a vent damper plate not operating, it's like a gate which controls the flow of air,,usually they are operated by vacuum, or cables.
