well could be two things. either your transmission has crapped out on you. or you have a shifter linkage issue. which means when the car is in park its not really in park. try this. move the shifter and see if the car moves in a different gear then what it says it is in . so if it moves in neutral it could be drive and reverse is neutral. if it does not reverse at all. time for a new trany is my guess.
Jeep has always had a problem down the line with the shifter linkage usuallly under the shifter, you have to take apart the console or column and locate whats broken inside there. I've had this issue myself with Cherokees too .
Hello and welcome to FixYa....Sounds like you have a direct short in the NSS, (neutral safey switch) RLS (reverse light switch)--- if it's fuse # 11 that you are blowing, then it's the safety switch. It's located on the transmission, passengers side, about half of the way up. It is a fan shaped switch with a big nut at the bottom, it is adjustable. It has slider type contacts in it that slide and click into position to complete a circuit when the gear selector is moved. Depending on type of tranny, the switch serves as 2 purposes, neutral switch & backup lights. It's probably full of gunk. I have removed them, taken them apart by removing the phillips head screws, cleaned with electric contact cleaner, coated with dielectric grease, reinstalled & and got another year and a half of service. Here is what the switch looks like....I hope this helps, good luck with your Jeep.
Check your rear emergency brakes. A brake shoe pin could have broke and the shoe locks up in 1 direction. but not the other. The other problem you mentioned could happen, but if it is in reverse the trans shifted.
Sounds like the lockup torque converter has failed. Repair requires trans removal and possible rebuild if converter has contaminated unit. Have a trans shop verify!!
check and try to loosen the brake adjuster (parking) all the way if not you have to remove the rear wheels and remove either the drum or the brake rotor assembly in order to check the lining for the parking brakes
Stupid question here, but did you put the valve body in backwards or upside down? Ensure all the connectors, lines are good....outside of that how about the gear selector? I have done alot of tranny work myself, but some of these things are common mishaps that I have done myself. Good luck to you and let us know what you come up with. Thanks for using Fixya!
