I have experienced a car with a heat sensitive crankshaft sensor so I would opt for that as my first choice. I doubt the fuel pressure regulator would cause your problem but it could be the fuel pump or water or dirt in the fuel tank.
This is classic of your alternator going bad. Sometimes, when it first begins to go bad it will function on and off. Soon it just stops charging the battery all together. The battery has one function and that is to start the car. Then the alternator is ran by the belt and charges the battery and in effect runs the car. The reason for the lights coming on is the power fail in the car.
Buying a new battery worked for a short time because the fresh battery ran the car but with no alternator to charge the battery the car soon died again.
The fix is to replace the alternator. Do it soon or even that new battery will go bad from being drained so much.
This same problem just started happening to mine too. My mechanic cannot find the issue. I have to get my catyltic converter replaced this week and am not happy about it.
Just bought the car last Spring.
How long have you had yours?
Sarah
I have a 1991 honda accord dx that had the same problem. while driving it would just completely shut down. after about 5 minutes it start and run for a while then shut down again getting more frequently. There was a recall on the ignition control module (ignitor) which is in the distributor. call your local honda dealer with your vin # and will tell you if yours was replaced. If not I bought one from parts store for $60 or you could take a chance and buy one from a junk yard. I bought the whole distributor for $20 as a back up.
It sounds like your fuel pump is having a problem with getting the last of the fuel from your tank. The pump also has a strainer on it. The unfortunate reality with the 1993 Volvo 850 is that the pump and strainer are located inside of your gas tank. You can look for kinks or pinched areas in the line but from your description it sounds like the pump is going. It has to work much harder when the fuel is low in the tank.
