94 GMC SUburban. 5.7, auto, 146,000 miles. Never have had ounce of trouble prior. Truck started to run rough as if plug wire was pulled off during operation or like maybe clogged fuel filter. Mostly when under load. I replaced fuel filter, plugs (platinum), wires, cap and rotor with no luck. I noticed like the stator (i think) was really rusted and pitted. I installed a new distributor, set timing. I still have the same problem, no better, except now at idle the engine surges, and when at a redlight the truck tries to lunge forward and will eventually cutout. What am I missing?

Due to it being a 94 model I would do a exhaust flow test on the muffler sys and see if it is partial plugged. The cat can get plugged and not allow the engine to pull fuel into the cylinders correctly. You can just put your hand over the exhaust pipe while the engine is running an feel the air flow out of the exhaust. You should not be able to just hold your hand there.

It sounds like the iac (idle air control) needs to be replaced or at the least cleaned you can find you tube videos on this.

SOURCE: Runs rough. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, timing all

Two problems. First fix the leaking injector o'ring. And when you have the tbi off doing that check to see if the gasket under the tbi is blown out causing the high idle.

It sounds like you have a vacuum leak or a carburetor problem. Check all hoses and the line going to the brake booster for cracks or leaks. Make sure the carb bolts are tight at the manifold. You can check for leaks using some carb cleaner. Spray around the base of carb while the engine is running, any leak will cause the engine to sputter when the spray hits it. You may want to look into rebuilding the carb or replace it. If its the original its a Quadrajet, they are not the easiest to rebuild but not impossible. If you rebuild it yourself, make sure to get the numbers off the carb so you can get the correct rebuild kit and accelerator pump. Plus you should replace the float when you rebuild since its 30 years old. A thorough cleaning of the carb is crucial before rebuilding. The fuel mixture screws have caps on them so they wont be altered after assembly from the factory. You'll have to remove those caps to remove these screws before cleaning. You can probably find some good info. on doing this at a good parts store. I hope this helps you.

If you can determine the ignition system is ok, I would look at fuel pressure and the fuel filter. If the distributor was loose you may have to check base timing.

First you need to retrace your steps...before you changed the timing chain and gears did It run ok ? what was initial problem, next put a fuel pressure gauge on your fuel line and cycle your key on to run pos, dont have to try start, just run and see if you have fuel press during the 3 sec or so pump cycles, should be around i think 35-45 roughly for tbi. so if you have good fuel pressure , then you say you have good spark, then your problem is either ingition or valve timing, did your dist.come loose, did you properly install chain & gears and align timing marks. did you have somethine else a part on it too like intake, dist, ? get back with me I'll try to help you.

My 94 chevy with a 5.7 seems to foul a couple of spark plugs at the back of the engine on the drivers side quite quickly. My uncle who is a mechanic said he has seen same problem many times on that engine.
I sugest you pull your plugs and clean or replace if necessarry.
The first time I changed the plugs on the truck to fix a rough idle , I started at the back of the passenger side and worked my way around.
Of course , the last 2 that I got to were the problem...... Heartless uncle just laughed.
Also , white smoke just at start up could indicate worn valve stem seals.

Help...94 Suburban 1500 auto 4x4, I am changing

I'm pretty sure GM built your truck with the diesel engine as an option so there is a way to make this work. The trans shifts are based on a combination of ground speed and engine RPM so as long as the computer is able to get these signals your trans should work. I put an early 90's overdrive in a mid 80's truck and didn't plug the wiring in because the trans used a 4 wire plugin and my truck only had a 3 wire. It worked fine, even overdrive.
A little jury rigging and ingenuity should find a way to attach your current kickdown cable to the accellerator on the diesel pump. GM probably has a bracket to make it fit. Check with the parts guys at the counter. Hope this helps.
