P1296 is a cooling system malfunction. The two things that will set this DTC is a defective Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor or the thermostat.

CAN A TUNE UP OF A 2002 VW JETTA GLS 2.0 5 SPEED THAT WAS TUNED TO A 2.8 MOTOR CAUSE THE TROUBLE CODES P0420 & P1296

I doubt they did a 'tune up' at all. you only replace a fuel pump when it has failed. And fortunately for them, you can't see if it has been changed because it is inside the fuel tank. As my old dad used to say "they saw you coming", meaning you got fleeced because you are female. Put this on your car, leave it there. It talks to your smartphone and you can even reset codes. The Catalytic converter one is not critical, but the overheating is.

P1296 is a coolant overheating code.

05568 mil request signal active check tcm for error. P1624 not a plausible signal

First off, let's simply define the OBD-II Trouble Codes:
Yes, 18032/P1624/005668 are the three codes that indicate "MIL Request Signal Active."
So, what does THAT mean (in plain English)??? This means that Fault Codes are stored in the TCM. SO WHAT'S THE SOLUTION?

2002 vw jetta engine code 1296. what does it mean.

My 2001 Jetta GLS Check engine light is on and I am getting 2 trouble codes P0171 and P1296. What does this mean? My temp gage is also reading nothing at all. 1 more thing I noticed when my low fuel light came on the other day my temp gage began to work but when I filled up with gas the temp gage went to zero again.

P1296 indicates that the car isn't warming up fast enough or at all. Determine if the gauge is faulty by checking the temp of the engine with an infrared thermometer. A healthy engine should operate at 190-200 deg. F fully warmed up. It may be that the gauge is accurate and your engine isn't reaching optimal temp because of a faulty thermostat. It also could be that the engine is actually warm and the gauge is wrong. Use the search feature, we've gone over this one a few times. Also note that P1296 has been mis defined a few times too. P0171 has been discussed here a million times. Check the trouble codes section and the search box.
,,,,, I pulled this off of the OBD home page, It is a close shot for your car, Hope it helps.

Vw jetta 2002 code p1296/po118

Both of these codes indicate trouble with the signal from the coolant temperature sensor.

So either the sensor is bad. The thermostat is not working properly and the coolant temperature is truly way out. The wiring to the sensor is short or open. The computer is bad and it is manifesting itself through this fault.

Does the car warm up properly? If it runs hot, or takes forever to warm up, this indicates a problem with the thermostat.

If the car runs at the proper temperature the next thing to look at is the coolant temp sensor and wiring. Some resistance values for VWs are here:

Volkswagen trouble codes i cant find in the book any ideas? the code says p1296

t's a cooling system malfunction code. Either the car took too long to reach operating temp (like a stuck thermostat) or is getting bad readings from the temp sensor. It's the same unit as for the gauge but a different part sends a signal to the ECM, so the gauge ma read fine.It means more than likely your Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) is faulty and reading an incorrect temp.
As noted by a few above, replace with the new "green top" version of the sensor, clear the code, and you should be set.
You shouldn't need anything else unless the thermostat is sticking open...
