1993 Dodge Stealth Logo
Anonymous Posted on Feb 18, 2011

Just bought a 1993 Dodge Stealth. It started the first day and sounded and looked good. The next day it wouldn't start and we tried jumping it, but it wouldn't start with a jump. We checked the fluids and a few things. The next day without trying anything, it just started. It was fine for a couple of days. We haven't driven it in a couple of days and when we went to start it wouldn't start again. It sounds like it wants to start (it cranks), but it won't turn over. What do you think it could be? Thank you for your time.

This is SOHC. Would a replacement capacitor kit do the trick? How xan you tell if it is getting fuel or a spark?

My money says it is the ECU (engine control unit) early 90's Mitsubishi's are known for poor capacitors in their ECUs. If the car is not starting, if it has spark but no fuel my first money is that of the ECU. If it has fuel but no spark I expect something within the electronics.

Is this engine the SOHC or DOHC.

If you need to replace the ECU there is a MD number you need to use to match the proper unit. The ECU is located under the stereo, remove the two interior flaps (carpet strips) that cover the shifter are. The ECU has 3 large electical plugs, remove these and unbolt the (3) 10MM bolts to get the ECU out

I have owned and replace three Mitsubishi veichles with bad ECU, one of which is my son's 93 Dodge Stealth with 3.0 SOHC.

Please let me know if this had assisted you.

Thanks,
Tom

Yes, it is very possible you may be able to replace the caps, I do have the capacitors as I had rebuilt an ECU for my Montero, tried another time and I fried the mother board "ooops". To check for spark, simply disconnect the ignition coil from the distributor and place the lead by a grounded piece of metal, manifold or such, leave a quarter inch gap or so between the metal alead and ground; have friend crank the engine over and watch for a spark at the wire lead, best with lights in garage turned down some. If no spark....Bingo you have an answer. If spark check for injector pulse, borrow a set of NOID lightsfrom AutoZone or such parts store, unclip one of the injectors and place the NOID lights in the injector wire lead. Have engine cranked over and watch for injector pulse (the light will flash) if you have spark and injector pulse chances are it is the fuel pump. There is a fuel pump relay in the car under a trim piece just right of th shifter, With radio off and everything quiet crank engine over and listen for click, if working you'll hear it open after you turn the key off, if this is ok listen for the fuel pump when you turn key to "ON" position but do not crank over engine. You should hear a faint whine or hum from the fuel pump (located in the gas tank) if you don't hear it try disconnecting a fuel line and have engine cranked over for a very brief moment as if it is working gas will flow PLEASE BE CAREFUL to see if fuel flows, if nothing it is your fuel pump or such. If it is the fuel pump no worrys as that is easy to access thru the bottom of the trunk.

    My money says ECU.

Please let me know on what you find.
    Tom

PS: If you want to try to rebuild the ECU let me know and I'll send you a set no charge, darn things only cost 15-cents each. If they fix the problem, and we ever meet, you can by me a beer, LOL

Just noted that the engine may not be cranking over but appears to want to (idiot me) if the engine is weak to turn over it could just be a bad battery, pull the battery and bring to parts store to be checked (a very bad battery will not even let you start with a jump) If the battery checks out I expect it is the starter, not too bad to replace located at he front-side of the engine. Always be ceratin to remove the ground cable if removing the starter as if the cable touches it can be very bad.

    Thanks,
    Tom

My 2007 dodge charger didn't crank so I jumped it

A battery from 07 is still decently new to be that bad, but I would check the alternator first, just get the car running and unhook the positive cable from the battery, if the car dies the alternator is bad.

1993 nissan pick up won't start

Possibly a bad connection on the positive side coming from the battery or a weak ground. Check where the leads join the terminal clamps. Has the battery been verified as good? It doesn't take a lot of amps to run lights but it does to turn over the engine. Jump starting it does not require a fully charged battery.

I have replaced the fuel pump on my 93 dodge stealth, but it still will not start. the engine will turn but it will not start. What else can I check and fix myself before I should consider taking it to the...

Always check for spark and fuel wgrn trying to diagnose a no-start. Check for fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge. Look up the recommended fuel pressure for your vehicle. If It's in range then fuel filter probably good. Check for spark by unhooking a wire at spark plug and connecting it to a spark tester and have someone try to start while you watch for spark.

My stealth runs fine for a week or so then it wont start in the morning and i have to jump it then it will run fine for a week or so again what could be the problem

get it looked at when it doesnt start. Things need to be tested. Since every parts easily 100 buck are you ready to just throw parts on the car when it could be several expensive parts that can cause this

93 dodge stealth sohc ran fine one day then wouldnt start

first you must determine if it has fire, and fuel pressure if so then injector pulse. Any OBD codes???? you really need a scanner to go any further without guessing.
