Here is the factory procedure to program a new key(s), I recomment only factory keys, you need to use the working key to do the procedure;
1. Insert a previously programmed coded key into the ignition.

2. Turn the ignition from the 3 (OFF) position to the 4 (ON) position. Keep the ignition in the 4(ON) position for at least one second, but no more than 10 seconds.

3. Turn the ignition to the 3 (OFF) position, and remove the coded key
from the ignition.

4. Within ten seconds of removing the previously programmed coded key, insert the other previously programmed coded key into the ignition.

5. Turn the ignition from the 3 (OFF) position to the 4 (ON) position. Keep the ignition in the 4 (ON) position for at least one second but not more than 10 seconds.

6. Turn the ignition to the 3 (OFF) position, and remove the second key from the ignition.

7. Within twenty seconds of removing the previously programmed coded key, insert the unprogrammed key (new/valet key) into the ignition.

8. Turn the ignition from the 3 (OFF) position to the 4 (ON) position. Keep the ignition in the 4 (ON) position for at least one second.

9. Your new unprogrammed key is now programmed. If the key has been successfully programmed it will start the vehicle’s engine and the theft indicator light will illuminate for three seconds and
then go out. If the key was not successfully programmed, it will not start your vehicle’s engine and the theft indicator light will flash on and off rapidly. If failure repeats, bring your vehicle to your dealer to have the
new key(s) programmed.

To program additional new unprogrammed key(s), repeat this procedure
from step 1 for each additional key

I lost the keys to my 1999 ford ranger xlt. i want to know how i can bypass the chip in the key that tells the alarm that its ok for the truck to start. need my work vehicle please help anyone. thanx

Technically you can't. The computer will not power up the coil and injectors without that chip. You can add a new chip as long as you have the old one, but it takes a dealer or really good locksmith to cut a new key with the original chip, or reprogram the system for a new key.

2001 honda accord keys were stolen and the thief broke into my car. Do I need to totally rekey or can I just reprogram the transponder and have the doors not work with the old key?

Hello Sophie,

FIRST OFF ...
>> I would ALWAYS choose a LOCKSMITH
over a DEALER regardless of cost (strong opinion).

Very sorry to hear of your violation...
It never feels the same but now you are SAFER with the
knowledge ... you were never actualy safe.

If other than your CAR keys were ALSO taken...
YOU NEED TO FOCUS on those other KEYS
FIRST (particularly house & mail-box)

Truth is...
your car is never ANY safer than the GLASS IN THE Door
(and only we... the owners... care about that GLASS).

Car TRANSPONDER locks are another situation.

If you use a LOCKSMITH it will be cheaper & safer.

I have used eBay to get my new KEY and KEYLESS
entry fobs... AND ... would TRUST a LOCKSMITH worlds
better & longer than I could throw a DEALERSHIP...!!

My niece had her car UNLOCKED and her HIGH-END
sound equipment expertly removed THE NIGHT
following getting her HONDA serviced at
OAKLAND HONDA ...
She nor I FEEL it was a coincidence (opinions)...

Where-as...
LOCKSMITHS trade on their excellent REPUTATION
and do the SAME work for half (or less) the COST.

2001 HONDA ACCORD 3 0L V6 Ignition Lock Cylinder RockAuto

REMEMBER to ask them the ERASE/OVERWRITE the
old keys & FOBs.

The locksmiths MIGHT know how to RE-KEY your existing cylinders (I think un-necessary)...
Dealers probably (opinon/experience) won't even TRY...

and of course...
NEVER leave anything of value in your car!!

If you are serious about this comment me back... I'll pull
your owners manual and look for your capabilities.....
Pretty sure WITHOUT 2 PROGRAMMED IGNITION keys
you can do NOTHING YOURSELF.

I lost my keys and have two new ones just wondering how i program them to my vehicle without going to dealership?

If you don't have an original key you are out of luck and will have to go to a dealership or locksmith to get them programed. If you still have one of your original keys you can reprogram the new ones yourself. Follow this link if you still have an old key.

Key to the car does not work even after changing battery in the key. Also the battery in the car is ok only has been replaced in the last few months. Does anyone know what my options are. Also do not have...

Chip in the key may lost contact with your module that receives info. Dealership will probably have to reprogram the key with your vehicle. Don't take long, but they charge $75+ to do the reprogram. We have a guy here that does this work and he does this for Ford, and all other major dealers. He charges $15 for spare cut key w/chip and dealer (him) charges $45 per key.

Key problem

Seems like what they did was had the car anti theft system reprogrammed to the new key only. Your car has a transponder anti theft system on it. What this does is your old key has a chip in it that when you put it in the ignition it emits a certain frequency picked up by the car. when the frequency matches the car, the car starts, when it doesnt your car will not start or not stay running very long such as your case. I would get ahold of the dealership and have your keys reprogrammed (unless your ok with using the new one the towing company made). Good luck to you and thanks for using fixya!

Sincerely,

JC
