2008 Chevy Express - Temp gauge stops working & check engine light comes on. Trouble code says low coolant, bad thermostat or defective sensor. Coolant level OK & have heat. If sensor is bad, would that cause temp gauge to malfunction?

SOURCE: coolant temp below thermostat regulating temp

more than likely the thermostat has stuck open. Or opening to soon not allowing the car to reach normal operating temperature. I would start by replacing the thermostat. Clearing the code and running a drive cycle and see if the code comes back. if the code does not return problem solved. if it does return replace the coolant temp sensor.

SOURCE: Overheating

maybe 3 things....leaking intake manifold gasket(very common on this car because pontiac used plastic manifold gaskets) may also be air in the system....bleed screw is located on the top hose and is painted blue. it may have some air cavitation. you may have a leaky or bad seal on overflow cap. check your oil dip stick...if there is a milk shake type foam look to it then the gaskets are ready to fail. get a compression test done and it will confirm everything the easy way. harbor freight sells a radiator pressure test kit and it works like a champ and its cheap....good luck

SOURCE: temperature gauge is getting hot have changed thermostat

Hello.

The air release valve is a black plastic screw by the coolant refill cap, if you unscrew this slightly after you've driven the car, it will release any air if it has any (be careful of the steam). If this solves your problem you're very lucky. I think it's most likely your water pump needs reeplacing. I would suggest getting this solved asap as there is a very real danger you can get your engine head damaged if the temp keeps going beyond the normal.

SOURCE: OBD-II Trouble code P0125-Insufficient Coolant

Whenever i get this code i like to clear it and see if it returns. Sometimes in extreme cold weather conditions it will set this code and there may not be anything wrong. What motor is in your celica?

Trouble codes p0118 temperature po118

code p0118 refers to engine coolant temperature (ETC) sensor ---circuit malfunction===causes---coolant thermostat---wiring open circuit/short to positive---wiring short to ground---ground wire defective---ECT sensor.. The temp gauge works off a temperature sender unit separate to the coolant sensor and if it is reading 100 then it indicates an overheat situation in the engine . Probably why the engine light is coming on. As the thermostat is in the list of causes I would replace it as a precaution. The coolant sensor is what tells the CPU to turn on the electric fans to cool the radiator

Would a bad temp sinsor make the heat stop working on 98 chevy lumina

No.
The temp sensor gives data to the computer and for the warning light or gauge on the dash.
If the heater is not working, it could be from low coolant, a faulty thermostat, or problems with the heater core.

With no Hot Coolant going past the Sensor, you get a false reading.
Low coolant is why the sensor wasnot telling you the engine was running hot.

2008 ENGINE HOT / AC TURNED OFF ALARM

There are a number of things that can cause the problem you are having. The most common is actually a faulty thermostat. If it sticks closed it can cause the engine to overheat (no brainer). What some people miss is a thermostat that sticks open or opens too early. This (the open thermostat) is most likely what's causing your problem. The engine doesn't heat up properly and the computer doesn't trust the readings it's getting so it goes into a failsafe mode. It turns on the light to warn you, turns off the gauge (because it doesn't trust it, if you will) turns off the AC to reduce tempuratures, and kicks the fans on. At some point (usually not the first time) it will set a code P0128 (coolant temp below thermostat regulating temp).
Here's what I recommend:
Check that the engine's cooling system is full and free of air pockets. I know you mentioned that the fluids are full but this is critical and worth double checking.
Check (when cold) to be sure the thermostat does not allow flow.
Allow the engine to heat up to make sure that it begins to flow.
Check trouble codes. Autozone will do this for free. Remember that it could take some time to set this or other codes but it's worth checking now. Please ignore them if they tell you the check engine light has to be on to check for codes and ask them to humor you. Tell them that some @$$hole told you to do so :-)
Get back to us with your findings. There is more to come. We may need to check for other issues like a faulty ECT (engine coolant temp) sensor, wiring/connection problems, computer problems, etc. but the other things should be checked first.

My check engine light is on, and today my temperature gauge stopped working and we have replaced the engine coolant sensor and the connector and temperature gauge still not working. PLEASE HELP

Could be the thermostat. I know nothing about cars but I noticed my 2000 Grand Prix temp gauge was not going to the normal level. My wife drives this car so I didn't notice it for a month or so. Eventually the Engine light came on. Took it to Autozone and the code came back as P0180... (1) low coolant (2) bad thermostat (3) enginge fuel temp sensor. They used a code reader that was about the size of an Ipod nano.

Coolant was okay, so took it to my mechanic. His netbook sized computer showed it was the Thermostat. He reset the codes and the temp guage went back to normal. Was short on $40 for the fix at the time, so I parked the car and promised to bring it back in 3 days. Went out and checked the car a day later at 25 degrees outside without starting the car... gauge still sitting at the normal level. No question it's the thermostat. That car will not be driven again until T.stat is fixed in 2 days.

I HAVE A 2007 CHEVY COBALT THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON I CHECKED THE COOLANT TEMP GAUGE THE DIGITAL GAUGE READING WAS ONLY SHOWING THREE BROKEN LINES. I CHECKED COOLANT LEVEL WHICH WAS FINE. ENGINE DID...

I had this problem with a 2007 Chevy Cobalt. I changed the coolant sensor and even though the check engine light went out I still had a reading of "---" on the coolant gauge. The problem is most likely one of three things: a low coolant level, a bad coolant sensor, or the thermostat needs to be replaced. The only other possible thing it could be is a bad BCM (Body Control Module) which in that case you would most likely be having other weird problems.

The Thermostat and the sensor are both very easy to get to and replace. Take off the engine cover by removing the oil cap and they are both to the rear of the engine on the driver's side. They are right next to each other.

Hope this helps!

Check engine light comes on when setting interior temp to warm when placed back to cool light goes off after few hours. check engine light code low coolent level temp

a. check thermostat and temperature sending unit b. check coolant level! (this should be a.!)
start the engine ,let it warm up a little, take off radiator cap, should see coolant circulating in radiator- if it isn't after a reasonable amount of time, then your thermostat may be defective! if it is flowing, your temp. sensor may be bad- or, perhaps, a loose wiring connection.
these newer cars can make it difficult to actually see what's happening with the coolant, so no guarantees!
good luck!
