My first step in troubleshooting this problem (1) Pump the brake padel a few times and hold with moderate pressure on the padel....if the padel holds still, just adjust the rear brake. If the padel gradually creep to the floor...replace the master cylinder...(you will need to bleed the system of air if the master cylinder is replaced or if any brake line is broken.

I had the same problem. Make sure the slider bolts in both front calipers are lubricated and actually slide. These bolts are cheap; there are 2 on each caliper - replace them all. "Bleed" the brakes.

You have to check your master cylinder, pump your brake several times and hold it, see if is going down to the bottom, if does, the master cylinder is wrong, check the brake pressure hose, maybe you have some air in your brake lines, be sure you have enough brake fluid

Had a defective brake light switch replaced on a 1999 Escort SE. A friend managed to removed the old one ( had to kind of twist it out) but was too fat to fit under the dash to install new one. I had a...

WEll, if the switch were to be too far down, essentially pressing on the brakes, this can happen, release the brake light switch and allow the pedal to come to it's normal stop, then adjust the switch for that position.

Aside from heat of brakes, other damage very unlikely.

Squishy brake feel with long pedal travel but brakes stop the car

You have to remove the air trapped in the hydraulic system. Look at change of brakefluid in a repair handbook and perform it as described.

Useful to change the brakefluid at least once every five years anyway.

Brakes wont come up

sounds like a bad diaphragm in your brake booster. listen for air while running at booster , disconnect vacuum hose depress pedal if it is good there should be a big difference in pedal

Brakes are terrible.

Sounds like two issue. The ABS unit might need replacement (known issue for ABS lights on) and the brakes need to be quality parts (ATE, Brembo, Girling, etc.) , not discount auto or pep boy type brakes. Those don't stop well. If the pedal travel is excessive, bleed the brake system first. If its still excessive, its most likely the master cylinder, not the booster (booster will make the pedal hard).
