Something electronic is overheating , transistor , . the engine computer , ignition module . crankshaft position sensor. Also check PCM power relay . losing power . Check for spark , fuel pressure when it stops running , see what is missing .

A solution is hard to give with out looking at and doing some testing but advise and help i can do, this sounds like a lack of fuel pressure, it died out and was hard to restart and backfiring from loss of fuel, this sounds to me like a fuel pump that is on the way out,
The first thing would be to have a fuel pressure gauge connected to fuel rail so that you can watch the pressure as you drive and see if you loose pressure when car begins to die out or back fire. good day
Can't believe some the lame answers here. Anyone having this issue check the PCV hose where it attaches too the air intake, the rubber breaks down and develops a leak. But these engines also have wiring issues that causes crankshaft sensor to fail at startup or under 1000 rpms causing the computer to shoot a code and trigger the engine light. I have these issue cause the above problem.
Have the cooling system flushed and replace thermostat. For oil leak try some oil stop leak from auto store, they work on small leaks( will take a couple of days to work).
