Question about 1996 Suzuki Sidekick

The clutch master cylinder loosing fluid you can add fluid and pump the clutch back up again but it does not last long. I don't see any leaks so i bought a new slave and master to replace it. However there is a part called a clutch throttle valve inbetween the master and the slave I don't know what it does, how to tell whether it's working to know if it can be cleaned ,replaced or what?

If adding fluid then theirs a leak somewhere and changing the master will be futile if its not leaking recheck lines and components

the slave cylinder needs to be level. get a small bubble level and jack up the front or rear appropriately till its level.

you have to bleed the air out of it. If there is not fluid leaking from the master cylinder on the firewall.it can leak on the inside of car or the out side if the master cylinder is bad.first make sure the reservoir stays full then open the bleeder on slave cylinder. this is called gravity bleeding. once fluid comes out, tighten bleeder, pump pedal one time loosen bleeder while holding clutch pedal down and then tighten. do this repeatedly until no air comes out. you can pump pedal several times,then hold and bleed however you like but I have better luck with individual pumps. just make sure that the lines hooked to slave cylinder are tight and there are no air leaks. and that the line does not go below the slave cylinder because sometimes air gets trapped in the lowest part of system.

I understand these cars have a sealed clutch system. When they fail you replace the whole kit master,hydrolic pipe and slave (comes in one piece). Search on ebay maybe £45 or so.

Do this by having a buddy sit in the car pump this pedal a couple of time and then hold it to the floor then open the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder. repeat until just fluid comes of or the bleeder valve. refill slave to proper level with recommend brake fluid. hope this helps.

No, the clutch and brake hydraulic systems are not connected.
If you are loosing fluid, you should be able to tell if it is leaking from the master cylinder where you add fluid, or the slave cylinder on the transmission.

Why is my clutch feel like there is air in the line it seems to have alot of play.


Air in the hydraulic clutch release System. The system consists of the clutch master cylinder, line, hose and clutch slave cylinder. Check the level at the clutch master cylinder. The fill reservoir is along the firewall on drivers side with a black cap. It uses DOT 3 brake fluid. Add fluid if low and pump pedal. If low you have a leak. If full you have a master cylinder internal seal bad so you have to have the master cylinder for the clutch replaced.

The clutch hydraulic system has a problem-either the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder on the bell housing may be at fault.

If the brake fluid is low in the clutch master cylinder reservoir, there may be a leak to the outside. Refill and check for leaks while someone pumps the clutch pedal. Check around the clutch master cylinder (also under the dash- if wet there around the top of the clutch pedal or if wet on the carpet below the pedal, the master cylinder is leaking.) Check the single line from the clutch master to the bell housing where the slave cylinder is. If no leaks found, likely the clutch master cylinder or the slave cylinder has failed internally.

Is it safe: there won't be any further damage caused by running it, but if shifting gets harder and harder to do, that may cause a driveability problem.

Is there any fluid on the ground near the transmission? It's possible the clutch actuating cylinder has failed. If it was air in the line you would have noticed it the day you got it back. The master cylinder is on the firewall next to the brake master. You can add fluid if it's low. If it's empty then there may be a loose fitting or the bleeder screw on the actuating cylinder may be loose too.

Hard to shift gears from shifter. Can go to transmission and shift easily.


loose or mis adjusted shifter cable to your transmission. usually, they break. stretched shifter cable? possible. manual transmission? did not specify. automatic? suggest cable problem,loose cable at some point,look with 2 people to see where the cables jumping during the shifting process. manual? suugest a bad or going bad slave cylinder on the side of the transmission,or low fluid to the clutch master cylinder.is the clutch pedal weak? or just goes to floor and will not come back up? this is sign of leaking clutch master cylinder,bad clutch master cylinder. or both. see brake fluid on ground under the car after you pump the clutch several times? either a bad clutch master cylinder,on the firewall,drivers side,just under the windsheild,or a bad slave cylinder on the side on the transmission under the car on the transmission. suggest that you look for fluid leakage. follow the trail of fluid to the source.

My clutch pedal one day got all loose and wouldnt get tight then i pumped it 4 five min and then it would get tight it goes back and forth between tight and loose and when loose wont go in gear and when...


Sounds like the master or slave cylinder is not right. If it gets tight when pumping it up, that's a hydraulic issue with the rubber parts not sealing, or air in the system.

Clutch pedal goes to the floor, will not release the clutch


Hello Henry.
There are a couple of possibilities.
First of all, check the fluid level in the reservoir under the hood. It is mounted on the firewall opposite of the clutch pedal. Remove the cap and pull the rubber boot out to fill it (with brake fluid ONLY!).
If it is empty there is a leak. It is usually one of two places. The master cylinder or the slave cylinder.
The master is mounted to the firewall and has a piston in it that pushes fluid through a line to the slave cylinder that is mounted between the engine and transmission.
Look for signs of fluid leakage and that will generally tell you which one needs repair.
The master on the firewall will usually leak on the inside of the truck where the rod from the clutch pedal goes to it and the slave will usually drip out the front of the transmission.

Clutch or master problem?


CHECK FOR ANY LEAKS STARTING AT MASTER CYLINDER THEN CHECK SLAVE CYLINDER AT G/BOX IF OK THEN BLEED CLUTCH MASTER CYLINDER OR SLAVE CYLINDER MIGHT HAVE WORN SEALS IN THEM THOUGH SO PARTS MIGHT NEED REPLACED.
