Yes it is a code the on board dignostic is saying there is a problem. I would go to your local parts store like Auto Zone and have a OBD II codes read. And that should clear up your engine light. Thanks!

It is misfiring. It likely needs a tune up. Have it scanned. This will tell you which cylinder is misfiring. Recommend replacing the plugs and wires

How do i read the engine codes on a chevy 2500 1989 without a code reader

There should be an aldl (assembly line data link) plug under the drivers side of the dash. Ground the A and B terminals and turn the key to the run position. Count the number of times the check engine light flashes.

I Have a 2003 silverado, 5.3. it idels low. code shows random misfires. engine light flashes, it smokes when you run it hard like its getting to much gas.

check the spark plugs just pull one on each side i bet you will find one very black and the other very clean if this is the case on the side you find a dirty one they all will be dirty. now to fix this you will have to replace both of the o2 sensors on that bank Chevy has an issue that when an o2 sensor goes bad or is shorted due to water entering the connection and the computer doesn't know how to control the fuel per that bank.after you do this you will have to drive it hard to clean out the carbon in the cats after a few trips it will clean up i have been there with three chevys.

Service engine soon light is flashing

When the light comes on without flashing, it just means an emissions problem, when it starts to flash it has become more serious. I suspect that there was an error putting the plugs and or wires. That computer can determine if there is a misfire and it will put out a P040X, code where X represents which cylinder is the problem. This will help you not have to take each one apart. If there are more than one, check each number.

Ex. P0401 means there is misfire on cylinder number 1

P0400 is a random misfire detected.

If you take it to an Advance or Autozone they will usually scan if for free.

By the way, if you used cheap plugs instead of platinum plugs that could do it too.

Hope this helps.

2005 chevy silverado v8, some hesitation, rough idling, ses light on and sometimes flashes. black smoke when reving the engine.

Black smoke could mean it is running rich, have a scan done, it is probably an engine misfire code and it will tell you which cylinder is misfiring. the last digit is the cylinder, unless it says random missfire, It may be time for a good tune up and don't forget the fuel injection system, Clean out the intake and do an induction cleaning on the injectors.
