1996 Jeep grand cherokee steering problem

When driving my jeep the steering is stiff (right or left). Essentially there is no recoil back to the straight position once i've turned the wheel. I tried it in a parking lot and when I turned it to the right or left it would keep doing circles and never straighten out. Any ideas? I know this happened gradually because i never noticed i was bringing the wheel back to the straight position it was only when someone else drove my jeep that they told me.

Thanks the tie rod's are new and also the universals. So I will assume it must be the ball joint?

Can it be the dampner shock?

Thank you I will try that out.

I have stiff steraing and when I turn left I hear a slight grinding noise coming from the left front tire area

stiff steering could be slipping belt for the power steering. while stationary, turn wheels to left and have a look back of wheel see if anything catching, only way.

Have a 1996 jeep grand cherokee zg model

The Jeep has steering idlers (short 7" arms) that eliminate wandering. Sounds like they are worn but FIRSTLY check that you have 4 identical tyre pressures as just one tyre front or back being low will give you the wandering sensation in a 4x4

97 Jeep grand cherokee with stiff steering at 9:00 and 3:00...

Check and see if the Power Steering Pump is Low on Fluid. If not Low, you could have a Leak in the Pump or Lines and will need to be Replaced. Also Make sure that the Belt is good and Tight. Please Rate My Response! Thanks!

I have a jeep grand cherokee and the power steering keeps going stiff is it the power steering pump or steering box

If it only goes stiff part of the time, the box is probably OK.

Before considering major surgery:
  • check the power steering fluid level.
  • condition of the fluid
  • condition and tension on the belts
  • check for low or uneven tire pressure
  • check steering linkages for damage (did someone borrow the car recently?)
If none of these check out, then consider replacing the pump.
