Yes, a loose distributor cap can cause engine misfires and lead to rough running, loss of power, and decreased fuel efficiency. A damaged or loose distributor cap can cause spark to arc to the wrong terminal, leading to poor engine performance. To fix the issue, it's recommended to replace the distributor cap to ensure proper engine operation.
not enough information as to make , model , year , type of equipment and fuel type
many modern cars do not have distributors as the timing is controlled the crank crank position sensor directly to the coil attached to each plug
or in the case of a diesel , there is not distributor at all
Loosen the cap, flip it, wipe it dry with rag or paper towel. Moisture does not normally build under the cap. What conditions exist that's causing it, steam, different temperatures.?? Water spray?
if they are getting carcon build up then you have a weak ignition control module and the wrong spark plugs . with the wrong spark plugs it is running and working hard
what year? what model? Only 5.7 Caddy I am aware of was a diesel engine used in the late 70'2, early 80's, in Caddys and Oldsmobiles. No distributor cap at all in those.
Check your distributor cap. You may have a moisture build up on the inside of the cap. If that's it, you will need to get something to seal the distributor cap, or replace it. I hope this helps
Take distributor cap off and look at the contacts if the have build up on them and the cap button has a black mark or burnt mark on it change them both. (You should always change the cap and rotor button when you change one of them.)
Hopefully this should be a cheap solution to fix the problem. Your timing is a little off. You need to adjust your distributor. First start your car. Then loosen the bolt on the cap. slowly turn the cap until the engine evens out and it sounds proper. Tighten the bolt on the cap. Turn off the car and everything should be good from there. Hope this helps.
