I cant get my fan belt on my 1996 300tdi it seems too small.

Find the adjuster idler pulley. It is a pulley that does not drive anything ie aircon, powersteering, waterpump etc. It will have a single 15mm? bolt on it. Fit a suitable spanner on the bolt and turn clockwise. You will find that with minimal force the whole pulley will move and the (old) belt becomes slack. New belt is no longer too small and can be fitted.

My 300tdi disco 1996 powersteering fluid has dropped and I have topped this up however my pump is now making a noise and the fluid is frothy , what can be the problem?

This is likely a faulty pump unit. When they get worn internally they tend to "froth" or airate the fluid. Could you see where the fluid was leaking from?

Handbrake adjustment, landrover discovery, 98

There is adjustment at the transmission brake backplate, use a 17 mm spanner to adjust the shoes to drum clearance. The cable adjustment is done by undoing and either removing or lifting up , the centre console, then you will see a plastic round adjuster and c clip , adjust as necessary.
Hope this helps

I used handbrake to stop Disco when being towed to start vehicle. Right foot was on accelerator pedal left foot on clutch and without thinking applied handbrake. Result handbrake locked in off position....

You may need to get underneath and adjust the handbrake adjuster, but you could have done some damage to the transfer box/rear prop/diff as a result of your actions. Best to get it looked at by someone who knows what they're doing to assess any damage.

Emergency brake stuck on 96 land rover cant find cable underneath carriage, is there a secondary release.. this is soooo stupid.. I feel I've looked everywhere please hepl..

Probably the same set up as my 96 Discovery, Automatic transmission. The emergency brake is the drum (looks like a big metal flywheel, about 14 inches diameter) on the output of the center differential going to the drive shaft for the rear wheels. There is a short cable from there up to the driver's lever. By disconnecting the rear drive shaft, the e-brake drum can be removed. Its pretty heavy, so don't drop it on your knogan.

Transfer case oil change- 1999 Land Rover Discovery II

No need for a diagram, to drain the oil, there's a drain plug on the bottom of the transfer box, under the handbrake drum. To fill, the fill plug is about in line with the centre of the handbrake drum and to the left. I think both plugs are 1/2" square. Fill to overflow with Texaco Multi-Gear 75W/90R. Takes about 2L or so.

Handbrake wont shift

It appears even when you release the hand brake, the wheels are not free to rotate.

Check for possible seizure; i.e
  • The hand brake cable
  • Wheel cylinder or caliper pistons
  • Brake shoes or pads
or any out of link parts for the hand brake mechanism.
