'98 Windstar ABS and traction control lights after getting brakes done

Got my front brakes done a month ago, two days later intermittent problems upon braking the whole van jolts as though the brakes are real aggressive and the brake pedal jumps real hard under foot (very scary). Now I sometimes hear clunking noise. Figured the rear brakes must need doing, got them done, van is fine for another two days, then same old problem back again. the ABS light is on 80% of the time now, and my traction control light has started flashing. Wish I could get this thing figured out, hate paying insurance to have a vehicle I don't want to drive for fear of my kids safety. Any ideas? Someone told me it could be dirt on the ABS sensor but I have no idea where thats located?

I am having the same exact problem, almost scary. We had the brakes done when we got the van in winter and have been dealing with the problem since due to necessity. We have placed a piece of electrical tape over the blinking light and also noticed that once we reach 25mph the ABS light comes on and the brakes work fine. Prior to reaching 25mph when we try to stop the brakes react similarly to a car that has killed. I agree it is very scary with kids. I posted something on another forum and they suggested unplugging the ABD module but I am wondering if that is safe.

Prior to the brakes being replaced you more than likely had metal to metal contact which can throw metal shavings on the ABS wheel sensors. This metal shavings stick to the road grime on the wheel sensors showing the ABS computer a false reading making the ABS light come on. On Ford Windstars, the ABS light and the traction control light are on the same circuit. A simple (and cheap) fix is to pull the ABS wheel sensors and clean them with brake cleaner or throttle body cleaner. Make sure you dry them well and reinstall. On the Windstar there is one bold holding the sensors to the back of the wheels. I recommend you spray some WD40 on the bold and wait about 10 minutes before removing.
If this doesn't fix the ABS light and brakes, you can have the ABS system diagnosed at a shop for about an hour labor. (Usally about $100)
I have fixed many of these type of problems just by cleaning the ABS wheel sensors. Good luck.

Running to each wheel are ABS sensors - E-Z to find, these are generally the only electrical wires running to the wheels.
If ABS kicks in (pulsation) only at low speeds, this was the cause/solution for me : Remove two screws holding sensor to inside of rear wheel. Carefully remove sensor and clean the metal part that was inserted into wheel hub - generally quite dirty / rusty. IMPORTANT!!: agressively scrape away any rust from the wheel where the sensor screws in - it pushes the sensor slightly out and causes it to activate ABS incorrectly.
Note: When your ABS light is on, it is not active so working fine means braking normally without ABS assistance - try to fix it before snowy weather.

Abslight stays on. How to fix? This is a2007trailblazer?

First you need to have EBCM - electronic brake control module check for DTC'S - diagnostic trouble code's . If the light is on there is a code stored . I think most part stores can do this and for free . After you find out what code is stored , looking up that code in service repair information for diagnostic trouble shooting chart would be next step . There are a few codes too.
DTC C0035 or C0040
DTC C0045 or C0050
DTC C0110
DTC C0131
DTC C0161
DTC C0186
DTC C0196
DTC C0201
DTC C0240
DTC C0241 or P0856
DTC C0244 or P1689
DTC C0245
DTC C0283
DTC C0287
DTC C0290 or C0292
DTC C0455
DTC C0550
DTC C0558

Find the code do the diagnostic's , fix the problem , wiring issue's , a sensor , bad module ,what ever it is . The light will go out then . Here is a sample of code discription .
• DTC C0035 Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit
• DTC C0040 Right Front Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit

2001 ford windstar lx master cylinder new i replaced but abs n brake light come on

Needs to have code reset for abs by a obd2 code reader with abs or find a parts house or shop that will reset it. Brake light coming on did you bleed the master cylinder out by connecting rubber lines to ths plastic insert ******* then acuating the master cylinder til all air is pumped out of master cylinder if that was not done then you will need to bleed all brakes until air is out of system that should turn brake light off

Lincoln ls year 2000 v8 3.9litres

ABS and traction control really are only for panic stops and if your tires slip on wet surface's and yes each tire has a sensor on it. However if the brake light comes on this has nothing to do with the ABS or traction control lights. It's not a parking brake light. This light tells you, you have a serious brake problem.

ABS and Traction Control lights come on intermittantly

At 45000 miles we had this problem. After replacing hubs, and abs sensors the problem was traced to a frayed wire at the firewall that was going to ground an the ac tubing.

Flashing traction control lighton 1998 windstar

the code means that the traction control module is detecting a problem with the solenoid that controls the ingage/dis ingage of the wheels. also if the sending units of the ABS system are either moved or damaged this could also throw a code. seeing you just replaced the brakes and rotors i would start there.

My ABS light stays on

Guest, thanks for the info. I replaced the brake pressure deactivation switch (for the cruise control) and everything is back to normal.

The Ford dealer told me to hold on to the receipt in case they recall them.

Thanks again.
